My old 1941 A ran fine when I parked it last fall. But even though I capped both exhaust and air stacks, the engine was stuck once I went to fire her up in the spring? This tractor had been sitting for years before I bought it and I noticed how watery the oil leaking out from the oil filter was all winter, as I'd stuck an old pail underneath her to catch it. What I'm wondering is could the engine being stuck be the result of a blowin head gasket? Or can anyone say what could be the cause of this problem other then that? Is changing headgaskets in the old A's a big job? And if this is what I need to do what other maitenence should be done while the tractors already apart? Thank's.

Thank's for the tips Steve and Jerry and I'LL heed your wise advise gladly. Gonna fill up the plug holes with a good rust remover today and let her sit for a while. Then when the time comes I'll first try cranking the flywheel or pulling her a little with my truck? After all old oil and whatever, has been drained and she's got a new filter in place, of course. Hopfully this will do the trick and I don't have to pull the head off of her yet, this year?

Make sure you leave your spark plugs out when you go to turn her over the first time. You don't want the fluid to pack in the cylinder and keep the motor stuck from that. You should drain all your gas out of your carb and probably clean it out once your motor is freed up. Just don't get too carried off when trying to unstick the motor. I have a 39 B that someone tried to pull and clutch the motor free and about all it did was twist the crankshaft and clutch driver splines. I pulled the head and freed it up by pressing on the head of the foreward piston with a screw type bottle jack and block of wood. Another thing to make sure you have is a good free clutch brakes and transmission. I have a boss that couldn't free his motor up and found out that his brakes were frozen tight, clutch was engaged and his tractor was in gear. Once that was taken care of, motor wasn't nearly as tight.

Thank's again Gerry for all the good sound advice. And I won't forget to take all the precautions you've listed before causing myself much more grief than I need with this tractor.

Take your spark plugs out and fill it full of your favorite rust remover like WD 40, murphy miracle oil or deisel fuel. hopefully that will help get it loose. That oil leaking doesn't sound healthy. You should put in a new gasket around the filter cap and be sure your filter bolt is straight up and down. Don't overtighten the filter cap. If you have lower oil pressure, maybe the pistons aren't getting enough oil to stay freed up? I like to give the motor a couple turns every week to make sure things are moving right even when I don't use the tractor.

Some times water gets in oil from when tractor sitting so long not being touched over a year. it happens when the Iron allover tractor is cold in morning and the Day turned out hot. it starts to get wet on outside and inside. just like if you had a cup full of water and ice it happens to drip water on the outside of the cup.
