3 point hitch drops

The three point hitch on a 2940 that I recently purchased at an auction appears to work okay, although it does jerk some while raising it. When the tractor is shut off with the 3 point in the raised position with an implement attached, the 3 point drops slowly, in about 5 seconds.

What would be causing this? The transmission fluid level is fine and I haven't changed the filters yet as I didn't want to waste the fluid if I have to drain it again to repair the 3 point.

Any advice would be appreciated.

A lot of Deere owners of used 20,30,40 series do make mention of jerky hydraulics. I experienced this on some of mine.(1020,2440,2840,2550) In most cases the cause of the jerkiness was air bubbles in the hydraulic oil. When buying one of these Deeres used I have found that checking the dipstik for air bubbles while the tractor is hot is a fairly good way to assess the tractors health. In most of these cases the loader or 3 pt works fine for a few minutes. Then as the oil saturates with the bubbles will you see the jerky operation appear. In one case the loader return hydraulics dumped the oil into the rear of the differential where it splashed down to reservior level. Re routing the oil line to a ported filter housing cured the problem. In my 2840 the cause was a worn pto brake (with continous live independent pto)which causes a pressured spray just above the resevior level loading up the oil with air bubbles. That fix requires a tractor split. Now when looking at used Deeres I take a flashlite and look into the Hydraulic oil filler hole for spraying oil and also a magnifying glass to look for the tiny bubbles on the dipstick. Mostly observed when the machines been operated for a bit so its hyd oil has been warmed up a bit.

I worked on a friends 2440 some years ago. It had a spec of dirt stuck in the thermal relief valve causing a leak. Any leaks in those systems generate a lot of heat. After you have the tractor running for a while, feel the outside of the transmission, rockshaft housing, axle case, etc. for any areas that are hot. A hot spot will develop where ever there is a high pressure oil leak.

Ayup, sounds like the lift cylinder seal is shot. You mite be able to see it if you unscrew the hydraulic oil filler cap and look inside with a flashlite. Chances are you will see the oil spraying out of the cylinder bore when the tractor is running and 3 pt raised. Be cautious as the oil is under pressure. You will have to pull the rockshaft housing under the seat to access the cylinder to install the repair kit. It wouldnt hurt to hone out the cylinder if it shows wear or is scored a bit. I rebuilt my 2440 cylinder a few years back and it was relatively easy. I dont think I had to dump my hyd oil to do the job. Warming up the new o-rings in hot hyd oil helped reassembly. Chances are the 3pt chatter/jerking will stop also. Thats usually cause by the oil spraying out of lift cylinder and accumulating tiny air bubbles that go thru the pump system. Another way for air to enter the system is if your pto brake is shot. Anyone else want to add or correct something here?

Sounds like your hydraulics have a bad seal around the piston(s).

hey wayne, my 2120 JD has done this for almost 2 years, i wondered what it was myself, never has given me any problems. the jerking does get the dirt off your plows!!! far as the lift not staying up, 2 out of 3 of our tractors don't stay up no time, age and use of the tractor contributs to this, good sign the tractor has some use on it.
