730 LP Main Bearings

Bought a 730 LP WF the other day, and the engine was stuck. So I took off the crankcase cover and got in there and took the rod caps loose, luckily the rods were setting were I could get to all the nuts easy, the I tried to mover the crank, it didnt budge. So I decided to go to the easy side, took the flywheel off, pulled off the slinger and the housing, and the bearing stayed on the crankshaft. To my suprise it is a one peice bearing. My question is, isnt the bearing suppossed to stay in the housing and not the crank. I would assume that the bearing would be stationary in the housing. Does the bearing press into the housing?? How does it work? I would think that the bearing would fit tight into the housing, and then slide onto the crank with enough oil clearance to run. Any thoughts would help... Thanks

The full round main brg is press fit to the housing. Look at the housing to see if they forgot to drive the locking pin back in place when they changed the main brgs. I have seen a few of the pins fall out some times after the brgs have been changed. They have to fit snug in the hole. Servicing the brgs and housings is a whole story in itself. But it can be done successfully if it is done right. You might check with Deere to see if they have the housings with brgs on exchange. But first you need to find out the condition of the crankshaft it might have been removed from the tractor and reground to a undersize. If you get the brg shell off ok and there is aluminum stuck to the crank try a small amount of muriatic acid to see if you can get the alum to come off .Polish with 400 paper and keep it oiled. The acid is very corrosive, be careful with the fumes and wear rubber gloves. Mike the crank for size you are on the way.Earl
