'48 B won't start after changing plug wires

I am desperate. I started this tractor up after dark and noticed a lot of arcing going on on the plug wires. I changed the wires and now she won't start. (I put the old wires back on, still no luck.) I am reasonably sure the wires are correct, because I got them at a local dealer who is a two cylinder enthusiasts also.
I have spark. I pulled the #1 plug out to check for spark, and the old girl reacted kind of violently with a big bang out of the plug hole when I turned it over. I grounded out the electrode far enough away so that this shouldn't have happened.
I have fuel, at least to the carburetor. I have drained gas from the carb to make sure I didn't have water in the fuel. But it still seems as though it isn't getting fuel.
I would pull start it, but the backfiring when I attempt to start it connventionally has me worried that there may be some major problem and I don't want to make things worse.
It acts like trying to start something with the coil wire taken off. Help! I live next to a "Red" tractor dealer who says that the reason I need two "green" tractors is because you need two in order to have one that will run.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Also, has anyone had any trouble posting messages at "Rummys"?

Gary, first try reversing the plug wires because if you have them on backwards she will backfire somethign terrible. If its set up correct, the number one left cylinder fires first out the top mag terminal or first distributor terminal and number two right cylinder fires 180 later. Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

John T,
I'll try reversing the wires, but I think I have them correct now..the top wire comes out of the mag and goes to the other side of the tractor (#1 cylinder in the flywheel or left side of the tractor. The lower wire goes to the #2 cylinder which is on the same side of the tractor as the pulley.)
I'll try anything, I'm getting desperate.
Thanks for the help[.

Gary, what you say is correct UNLESS someone has the mag in 180 out, in which case it would be opposite. What Im saying then is even if they are that way, you may want to try and reverse the wires if she backfires. Let us know John T

Take the plugs out and then turn it over and make sure the gas is blown out of the cyls. and the turn it to compression on # 1 with the plug wire hooked and c if it fires on 1 cylinder when it gets to the mark on flywheel , if it does it is wired right then c if # 2 fires if it does u got some other prob but u prob got it wired backwards , hope this helps a little .

Sure you have the plug wires on the right cylinder?
