I'm reading some bad things about my recent 2010JD gas purchase. However, it seems anything post 1963 is more tolerable. How can I know the year of my tractor? I found the nameplate on the right side of the engineer with the serial number, but no date. The serial number was 47764.

My 2010 gas seemed to run very good with a few compliants.
1. The brakes are terrible. If there anything I can do about this?
2. The column shifter is very moody at times. Sometimes I just can't get in 4th and 5th gear. Any thoughts? Lubribants, adjustments, or just the way it is???
3. Mine is a tri-cycle type. If there any easy way to convert it to a wide front end?

Thanks in advance for anyone's help.
Rob

Valu-Built has brake discs at a very reasonable price, less than $40. I have a 65 2010 Industrial loader and other than it's age and lack of repair ,in cases, it seems to work great, I really apreciate the down shift engine brake, almost ran it off a bridge before figuring that one out. I've converted mine to 12v -ground, rebuilt the front end, installed analog gauges for temp, alt, and oil pressure, since some were tale-tale lights and others didn't work anymore, replaced the down link plate, seat, installed an umbrella, Plumbed it for rear hydraulics, and fixing to do the brakes, and still in the tractor for just over $3k.

We have just purchased a 2010JD gas tractor. It is a first purchase and project for us. we have recently begun a overhaul on the engine. Any suggestions or info would be useful. Thanks

You have one of the late models which is good as the early models had many problems. By serial #42000+ most of the problems were solved but then it was too late for the reputation. The brakes are a poor design and are marginal even when all the parts are as new. New discs are VERY expensive. I thouroughly degreased everything I could and mine work OK but that's it. Lube all parts of the shifter linkage very well including under the dash (which is a chore) and check adjustments against the service manual and it should work fine. It's a long winded linkage so it needs to be tight and accurate to function properly. I like my 2010; good luck.

Your 2010 is a 1964. You have encountered the main reason why people are down on 2010's the transmission. They are notorious for not shifting, jumping out of gear and every other malady relating to transmissions. If you can make the necessary repairs to the trans. and\or shifter. If you don't the problems will only get worse. As for the brakes, they can probably be cleaned up and the actuators lubed.

From what I know, the first series of DIESEL engines, after the 2 cylinder era, had some problems. A 2010 would fit into this group. But as far as I know, the gas engines had no trouble. Our 2010 diesel was a fine tractor, but would have been better if it was gas, as we had trouble with the diesel. They are well designed tractors, but all these tractors with the column mounted shifters will be balky to shift at times. I dont know of any lubricants that would help, but just make sure the linkages are adjusted properly. Thats the best that can be done. And yes there are kits to add a wide front to it, or scavenge one from a salvaged tractor.

Rob, if you like the tractor that is all that really matters. Why solicit any criticism? About fixing the problems you described, recommend a shop manuals/parts book and go to it.
