I own a 196? tri-cycle style 2010 JD. After I purchased it, I hear that all JD tractors ending in 10 are not good, especially 1010 and 2010s. Is this true? If so, why? Are some 2010 worse than others..... .meaning row-crop verses row-crop utility verses hi-Crop.

Help!!

The 10 series won over a lot of guys that would't own a two cyl. Remember that it's been 41 years since they came out with the 10 series. The biggest proublem with the 10 series was they were over rated. In 1960 J.D. fell into the "rev up the engine to the max to get the H.P. rating." If you study the NEB tractor tests it will show that the 2 cyls were rated at standard P.T.O., 540 R.P.M. The 10 series were rated with the engine wound tite, but if you look at the part of the test where they tested the P.T.O. at rated speed the 1010 was not 35 Hp but 28 Hp same as the 420,430. The 2010 was not 45 Hp but 38 same as the 520 530. And the 3010 was not 55 Hp but 48 Hp same as the 620 630. The 720 730 was 58 Hp and rated as a 5 plow tractor. The 4010 was sold as a 80 Hp tractor but still only a 5 plow tractor. You may have to buy some parts but the 2010 was a nice handling tractor. Most of them around here pulle 2 16" plows same as the 530. I have lit from 1960 claiming the 2010 would replace a 630 and showed the 2010 with a 4 bottom semi mount plow..... ..YEA RIGHT!!!!

Hey mike,
sounds like you guys have some tough soil if all you are pulling with a 2010 is 2-16" 's! I thought they were rated a full 3 plow tractor just like the 530.....or is it just that the 2010 was NO REPLACEMENT for the 520/530? (heheheh) but seriously, is your ground that hard...i know a 530 has the beans and torque to do 3 in HARD soil....or is the 2010 just lighter or what?

A plow requires 5 to 12 p.s.i of furrow section, depending on soil. So a 16" bottom plowing 6" deep in light soil is 16x6x5=480# of pull.per bottom. A 16" plowing 8" deep in heavy soil is 16x8x12=1536# of pull.of pull per bottom. Then look at the Neb tests and see how many #s pulled in the gear your are going to plow in and do the math. A 2010 pulled 4273# at 3.37 M.P.H. and 3526# at 4.30 M.P.H.that was with the engine wound tite at 2500 R.P.M. NOT 1900 R.P.M. which was Standard P.T.O. speed. The tractor wt was 6310# A 520 pulled 3685# at 3.28 M.P.H. and 2755# at 4.31 M.P.H. The 1325 engine R.P.M was the R.P.M of all the tests which was the standard P.T.O. speed. and wt of the tractor was 6505# But there is no way to compare the two off the tests because the the 2010 was tested at 2500 R.P.M. They could be compaired if the 2010 was tesed at 1900 R.P.M. You are not going to run a 2010 at 2500 R.P.M all day plowing and have the engine last. To get a 3 plow rateing, the tractor had to pull 3-14" plow 6' deep in "average" soil in its recomeded plowing gear.

ADDITIONAL:....To come up with the "full 3 plow capasity of the 520/530 it was a math calqcation.

5+12 devide by 2= 8.5 or 8.5 # of pull per sq in x 14" x 6" or 2142# of pull required for 3 14' plow, which the 520 530 handled in 4 gear. Soil contitions is whats important. Soybean stubble will plow like a piece of cake. Old sod will plow like concrete in the same field. As will flat ground as opposed to hills. A 520/ 530 in central Ill in corn,,,3 16" ...Clay hills in sod,,,2-16". A "A" was also 38 HP but as a kid in southern Wisc I remember a lot of guys had 2 plows 3 14" for corn and 2 16" for sod. Given a choice and only with one plow I would go for dropping a bottom and staying in the rated gear and be able to plow anywhere on the farm at any time. and not over work the tractor. Ground plowed in a 10 hr day is width of plow in feet x M.P.H. x 80%, so every time the tractor lugs and you lose ground speed you lose capasity. This was the thinking behind the 4000 rated as a 4 plow tractor when it was the same HP as the 4020 which was rated as a 5 plow tractor.

Hi,
hey that was a really intereresting post. I was curious how you determine the psi of the soil...like some examples and ways to tell. Obvoiusly sand would be like a 5 and clay and muck a 12. Thanks for the info, i was always curious about this.

Some of us went to AG college. Still can't spell though. As a disabled Vet going to U of Wisc. under the G.I. Bill during the war protests I kept my mounth shut and stayed on the AG campus,,,,any way the info is in one of my old text books. It did not cover the type of soil as I explained in the post above there was too many other factors in volved beside soil type.
