What is the best way to add power steering to my JD60? Could I put a Charlynn pump on it? Thanks, Ricky

I worked on a farm that had an Allis Chalmers WD with a CharLynn steering unit. It looked funny with the added hoses etc., but it was genuine "finger tip" steering. I'd like to put one on my 50 JD some day.

I believe I have seen the char-lyn units on JDs, there were a lot used on IH Ms. They aren't like factory and put a lot of pressure on the worm gears, but part of the secret is to not sit and turn the wheel when the tractor is stopped. I believe the char-lyn units are still being built, if not there should be some in salvage yards, especially off of Farmalls.(just have to repaint it) if you have live power you wouldn't need a pump, just a priority valve. then again inf you can get a parts tractor with the factory power it would probably cost less and work better in the long run.

If you are in Michigan I have a 730 parts tractor that has a power steering pedestal that will bolt right on. $400.00 takes the whole tractor. :-)

I have to disagree with Jim. I had a 60 with charlyn power steering and it worked great. If you are patient you might be able to find a parts tractor with factory PS to buy for less than many scalpers want for just the parts you would need.

You can put a Charlynn on it, if you can find one. Aftermarket "powersteering" is kind of inadequate though. You can also replace the entire front pedestal on your tractor. If your 60 is an early one with a solid pedestal that is a lot of work. If you have the two piece, which is the one where the rollomatic comes off separately and is convertable to WFE, then it is the upper part. The cost of this would likely exceed the value of an unrestored 60. I suggest getting the whole tractor with power steering already in it. In any case, you should get a parts book so you will know what parts are needed.
