What farmall does the JD 60 compare to as far as HP and Pulling ability? Does it pull like an M or a bigger tractor? I have bought one and want to know what it will do. I have always used farmalls and am very fimiliar with them. Let me know. Thanks, Ricky

From experience, and not counting the effects of a poor memory, I'd say that the 60 best compares to the M Farmall. The John Deere A, back in the early '50s, was supposed to be comparable to the M, but I never saw one that would keep up with an M. The 60 was a full three-plow tractor, as was the M.

What are you smokin ? The M and the 60 are real tractors in the field not just chore tractors.

JD 60 low gear pull = 4,319 lbs. at 1.23 mph
IH Super M low gear pull = 5,676 lbs. at 2.45 mph
AC WD-45 low gear pull = 5,441 lbs. at 2.11 mph
AC wd-45D low gear pull = 5,908 lbs. at 2.06 mph

I know, losers always try to find reasons to discredit facts so lets here yours.

What were the tire sizes, hitch height, tractor weight & rated HP of each?

60 = 13.6x38;?;7,405#;40.24hp Max pull=4,319#1.23mph
SM = 14.9x38;?;8,929#;46.26hp Max pull=5,676#2.45mph WD-45=14.9x28;?;7,755#;43.21hp Max pull=5,441#2.11mph
WD-45D=14.9x28;?;8,065#;43.29hp Max pull=5,908#2.06mph

Also JD 70 = 5,453# max pull at 2.18mph
70 = 14.9x38;?;8,677#;48.29hp

As far as weight and drawbar height goes the tractors are weighted to a point that will load the engine. If the tractor is capable of pulling only so much then putting on more weight just bogs down the tractor even more. They don't weight them to overload the engine so if one is lighter than the next it is because that is all it can handle. The drawbar height won,t matter if you throw more weight on to compensate which is most likely why the SM was weighted so much because of low drawbar and it also pulled pretty good.

Stock JD two cylinders, although reliable tractors, are consistantly ranked at the back of the pack when it comes to power and luggability.

Looking at numbers & will get back to this, darned good question. HP is HP no matter who is making it.At the same weight & same HP the lb pull should be the same if the power can get to the ground. There has to be a reason why the Deere's expecially the 60 didn't get the power to the ground & the SW did. The higher speed of the SW put a greater % of HP to the ground & the yet it's co-eficient of friction was similar to the 70's although heavier per HP & had way poorer traction co-efficent than the WD's. Did notice the Deere's were rated in belt HP rather than drawbar which is about 91% . 60= 36.9HP & 70gas = 44.2HP That low gear pull on the 60 certainly shows the folly of over ballasting a tractor & travelling slower than 3mph on bias tires. Ruins crop yield as well. Would like to see the % of power to the ground at 3 to 5 mph as required by bias tires to work best. While weighing 125 to 140 lb per HP as the manufactures request. All but the SW were overballasted by 128% to 133%. The SW was weighted to 157% over recommended max. I've pulled the 60 & 70 in the same 6500lb class one after the other & the 60 took 3rd prize being only a couple of feet behind the 70.It was sticky clay track that put all the power to the ground & was causing the front wheels to bounce at the end. According to those tests the 60& 70 should not have even been close? The WD45D put the greatest % of it's weight into pull.The SW put the greatest % of it's engine power into work.

Ricky,

Here are the horse power results from Nebraska tests: IH M - 36.07, J.D. 60 - 38.56, IH 350 - 39.31, IH Super M - 43.92. You be the judge. I'm not even going to get embroiled in the lugging ability thing, which is better, blah, blah, blah. Let the yeahoos do that.

Jim
