Rob, I have grown up with John Deere model Ds here in Western Australia. I have manuals & parts books for Ds from 1927 to 1951 email me for information to put your tractor in running order.

Regards
Mike Tancock

Hello Rob, Here is my two cents worth, I would change ALL FLUIDS,ie crankcase oil, breather oil, transmission oil, reduction gear case oil, antifreeze, also I would make sure that the air breather filter(wiremesh),and all air ways are clean,(muddobbers, wasps, etc.)Make sure you have gas and a spark. If the carbartor is like mine, there are some very small passages that will have to be cleaned and you have to have a diagram and small drill bits to do this with(IT WILL NOT WASH OUT OR BLOW OUT). After all that then I would try to start it. Hope I didn't scare you away and I hope this helps, good luck and let us know how everything turns out, Deereranch6

Rob,
I'll give it a try. I believe the Model D is a smaller variation of my Model B. Obviously the first thing you need to do is make sure that you are getting fuel. Sounds simple, but is often overlooked. I don't know what shape the carburetor is in, but you might want to take it apart and clean it good before you try to start it. They get gummed up pretty good just settin. There are a lot of small passages that need to be thoroughly cleaned. THere is help here on these pages to clarify what needs to be done. (I even had someone who sent me a diagram and pointed out what needed to be done.) And make sure your plugs are clean before you start. Plugs make a big difference with these tractors, and Autolite seems to be the plug of choice (Champions seemed to be universally disliked.). Once you get all that done, this is the technique I use to start my B:
Chole full "on" or closed. Throttle half way. I only open the petcock on the same side of the tractor as I am standing, near the flywheel..(others open both). If your carburetor, timing, etc, is OK, she should start pretty easily. ( I very seldom have to spin the flywheel more that 2-3 times.) Once it is running, I open the choke and close the petcock immediately. That's about it! IF she runs, but doesn't run very well, chances are you missed something when you cleaned up the carb. Hope this helped, let us know how it worked out!

While you have the plugs out, you should check the spark to make sure the mag is in good condition.

Congratulations on your first JD. thing is they are like potato chips, you can't have just one!! If I were you I believe I would get at least an operators manual for it, Best source is JD for them, a parts manual and service manual is also good. I have a CD rom from Deere that has parts for all JD tractors up to the 30 series (630 etc). Don't know how thinks work in Australia, there is an 800 number for the publications here. Good luck with the D. They're a neat old tractor. As long as it turns over freely you have the biggest aprt of the battle won.
