Ed,

The 401 is the industrial version of the 2020.
The 301 is the industrial version of the 1020.

I have a 301. It's a sweet machine. It will be the better tractor for font loader work. The JD has a massive front axle. The Fords seem to have a light axle for loader work.

You can't go wrong. Good power steering, inboard wet brakes, high pressure closed valve hydraulic system.

$8K is top dollar, but not excessive for a tractor in excellent shape with loader. It's equivalent to a Ford 4000 series in size and HP. If the prices are close, choose the JD.

Thanks Ken,
On these older machines, its hard to know what is what, actually the man now said he would take 6 cash, has no rust at all, haven't heard it run yet, they are getting starter rebuilt, but they promised me it runs fine. In the "Not running" status, it seems to have a lot of play in the steering wheel, I am hoping that once it starts, the hydraulic pressure will alleviate this, if you know of any good links for support info. let me know and thanks again for the info. Ed

Ed,

Don't judge the power steering while the engine is not running. When turning the steering wheel without pressure, the shaft will move up and down - it's all part of the way the hydrostatic directional valve works in the steering column.

In good shape with a loader and running - rob the cookie jar, and buy it for $6K before he can change his mind.

You're now getting to the price where you're not putting much at risk.

Tractor easy = $5K to sell separate assuming 3 point hitch and 540 RPM rear PTO.

Good loader with hydraulic bucket = $2K

This is the base tractor for the 401 industrial backhoe.

Thanks again Ken, I have been really nervous about buying anything, especially since I looked at another machine previous, "pile of junk" advertised as totally rebuilt, and drove 300 miles to look at it. Its the massey M30 advertised in the Heavy equipment trader "online" over in Fort Pierce, Florida. The machine doesn't even look like the picture they posted, I later found out the owners also own a used car lot. It was/is in pittiful shape. The John Deere 401 looks like it sat in a garage most its life in comparison. I'm supposed to go look again and probably purchase on monday, I'll post the results, and thanks again, your words have eased my concerns, now if it will just fire up and run acceptably I'll be home free!!
