I don't think you'll hurt the vavles if the pipe isn't very short. If it makes it out the top of the cowl it's probably fine. The problem with short stacks is that the valves cool too rapidly, causing them to warp.

I worked on a farm when I was in high school. They had two 4020's. Neither one had a muffler They were in use constantly and never had a problem.

I don't think It would contribute to a loss of power. When I pull my 4020 I usually run a straight pipe, in hopes of it running a little more free. I have heard people say that if you run a straight pipe all the time, that it might not be good for the valve train, and that alittle back pressure is a good thing, however, I'm not for sure on that. A straight pipe I think increases power, but even if it doesn't it sure makes them sound mean. Good luck with your tractor. Greg H.

I ALWAYS GOT A KICK OUT OF PEOPLE WHO SAID THAT THE MUFFLER "CUSHIONS" THE VALVES....COME ON, THINK ABOUT IT. AT THE SPEED THE VALVES MOVE IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT KIND OF PIPE IS ON IT. ANOTHER MYTH IS YOU'LL BURN THE VALVES WITH A STRAIGHT PIPE...HOW I DON'T KNOW, THE EXHAUST TEMPERATURE IS ALL THE SAME COMING OUT OF THE HEAD. THE ONLY THING A STRAIGHT PIPE WILL HURT IS YOUR HEARING...

The only thing I would worry about is chilling an exhaust valve on shutdown if the pipe is extremely short. This might lead to a warped valve, which might burn. I believe this may be a holdover from airplane engines, where you try to keep the exhaust system as light and short as possible. By the time any air goes back through a cast iron exhaust manifold, I doubt it would be cold enough to do any harm.
