I recently inherited a JD 2010 gas-engine wheeled tractor. I have received conflicting information if this tractor is supposed to use leaded gas or if unleaded is OK.

I believe the tractor is about 1972 vintage.

Thanks!

Bill, the addition of lead accomplished two things. One, it helped pervent pre ignition spark knock (not generally that important on low compression tractors) and it also cushioned and lubricated the valves/seats. If the tractors valves and seats were designed for leaded fuels and you run it without lead, the valves/seats wont last quite as long. However, with light or low useage, it will take a long time to wear out the valves anyway and if overhauled, hardened seats can then be added. If youre gonna use it long and hard, a lead additive could be added if youre a worrying type of guy. Good Luck Ol John T Engineer in Indiana

Thanks for the info John. I knew about the valve seat wear issue but not the detonation. Do you know if this particular year JD2010 Gas was DESIGNED to run on leaded gas? In other words, do you (or anyone else) know if it has hardened valve seats? Thanks so much again.

It was designed to run on leaded fuel because that's all there was when the engines were designed. It's a non issue unless the engine is being run continously at high temperatures, full power and high RPM's on unleaded. Detonation is not an issue of lead or no lead but octain. For instance there is 116 octain unleaded and 100 octain low lead. They call the cheapest fuel at the pump "tractor gas" because it will work in any old stock tractor just fine. Use it and enjoy without worries.

Bill,
The 2010 was not made in 1972. The 2010 was only made from 1961 to 1965. Based on that I would say that your 2010 was ment to have leaded gas. I wouldn't worry to much about the unleaded gas in your 2010 though. I never had a problem. Steve
