I"ve had older Farmalls and just bought a JD 3020. I"d like to know what size plow it will pull. I know it depends on the soil, etc., but this is a 70 HP diesel, and I can"t find a source that matches John Deere tractors with equipment. Anybody out there can tell me 3, 4, or 5 bottom?

Our 3020 power shift pulled 4/14s in good black soil between 3rd and 4th gear for years. When we plowed alfalfa it had root cutters on landslides and pulled in 2nd and 3rd 15/5/38 tires 4 sets wheel weight on light wheels no fluid. This was a pull plow semimount you would need lots of front weight.

4-16s in most of Indiana is right.

3X16 will stop a 70HP tractor in blue clay unless over ballasted. 4x16 is fine in sandy loam. What kind/condition of tires and how much ballast? Is the plough drawn or semi-mounted? Has the tractor been dynoed to know it's actual output? A 2WD tractor with bias tires pulling a draft load should weight between 7700-9400lbs. More ballast than what is required uses fuel to carry the weight instead of pulling the plough.

With our '67 3020 we pull 3-16's. We used to have a set of 4-14's that we used on my grandparents blow sand but it would never pull them in heavy ground. Sometimes the 3-16's would give it the fight of it's life on the river flats but that is thick, heavy, nasty clay.

I would agree with Tom, a 3020 is a three plow tractor in tough conditions.
