I have a 1941 John Deere A and the governor is all screwy. I have almost no control over the throttle on it, it is either idling or wide open and im afraid of blowing it up with the way it acts. even idling it idles way too high and it doesnt have the POP POP sound of a john deere like it should either. the governor looks to be all there and in tact but i have never taken one of those apart so i dont know what to look for when i do and i dont know what i need to be careful with or anything. can anyone help me?

If anybody remembers correctly I had this same problem on my 1941 A last year. It had sat for quite some time and was stuck. It has a Power Block in it. I took everything completely apart of this thing. Excluding the mains, I put every bearing, seal, and gasket brand new in it. The govoner did the exact same thing. I found that the govoner shaft was worn. It had a spot that that would hang up. I put another shaft in and it cured the problem. Before I paint it I'm going to take it back off and put a new bushing in the govonor case and weld the shaft up and turn it back down. Check the operating sleeve as stated bove though, it can cause headaches too. Good Luck.

Your linkage could be out of adjustment or the weights are worn or missing. Also the thrust bearing sleeve may be stuck. You can see inside the governor by taking off the side plate on the left side. Remember to take off the mag before re-installing this plate or you could damage the mag. Ron Mn.

Ricky -- Was there any work done on the tractor between now and a time in the past when it ran correctly? Or -- do you lack history data on the tractor? It sure would be easier to guide you if we had more background data.

In the meantime, there is some good reading on JD governors at the JD-H Restoration Site (below) Scan across to ARTICLES 2, and from the drop-downs, select GOVERNOR. There is some theory up front, some "H" peculiar stuff about L.H. Bearing Housings, the some very important discussion of the governor-fan shaft interface, but at the very end is where you will find a short, 2-paragraph procedure for adjusting linkage between the governor and carburetor. I would check this first!

But I encourage you -- the whole piece makes for a very good read on JD governors, and you will need to know most of what is in there if you have to dig into the governor. (PatB)

When I took my 620 apart to replace the tach drive I had to take out the gov. and when I put it back together I did not get the fork that rides on the inside of the gov the correct way and my tractor did the same thing. Reved up like crazy before I could hit the key. At idle possition it reved pretty hard. I had never taken on apart before but it wasn't hard. Took my time and figured out what I did wrong and all set. If its like mine you may be able to take off the side cover of the gov housing and look in to see if something is obviously wrong. These other guys on here could do it in their sleep. I am sure someone in here will give you a better idea..
