HI, I am a proud owner of my first JD 2-Cylinder tractor, but the ID Tag is missing and I just would like to know what year it is for my own piece of mind. Here is what I do know:

1. No Power steering
2. It has ovel holes in the rear wheel centers, not perfectly round holes
3. The big difference I can notice looking at other 60's is the tag location. All of the 60's I've looked at lately are rivited to the side, twards the bottom of the trans, where mine was located on the top of the trans, more like a model A would be. Has anyone seen a 60 with a tag location like that?

Thanks again!! Rob

I have a 60 the same as you described with SN 6012428 which makes it a 63. The tag is on top below the distributer. -----Harold

Rob, odds are you have a "52. There were three different locations for the serial number tags on a 60. Yours is the first which is like the A. The slightly later tractors (of which I have one) have the tag on the side of the main case almost exactly in front of the belt pulley. The later 60"s have the tag in the same place as the later 20 and 30 series tractors, which is on the side of the main case but lower than the belt pulley. So you likely have a "52 or very early "53 tractor. Hope this helps. Mike

Wow, Thanks so much guys for the help! I didn't realize that there were 3 different spots for serial tags on 60's. Nor did I realize they started in 1952, as I thought 53 was the first year.

Is there anywhere on the tractor where I can find the serial number or where there would be casting dates? Thanks again, Rob

Rob,

From the location of the SN tag and the "window pane" wheels, I would say it is a 1952 or 1953.

The no power steering would have nothing to do with estimation of the year as ps was an option.

Oval wheels are early, round '54.

Power Steering was not immediately available at the 50/60 introduction. My parts book says Power Steering pump and pedestal parts starting at 6037000, so they made quite a few early ones without it, and of course those that were bought without it after that point.

Yeah, there's quite a few little things that came in as the model evolved. Another is the single-throat carburetor was used for the all-fuel up to a point, then they brought in the duplex carb for all-fuel.
