I want to remove the steering spindle (AB 4966 R) from inside the pedestal. I've got the cap screw out of the steering gear (B 3102 R),now will this spindle just drive out or will I need break it loose where the quill and cylinder bolt to the pedestal?

Be sure to get some help installing the housing as these things are bears...I've always used my motor hoist and ease it down in position. You have to have it up a little to position the gear back in place and I always rotated the gear 180 so I would be using unworn teeth. Keep fingers clear of every think, have some tire tools and pry bars. Be sure to position the new o rings and I always shot some lubricant so they would not bind going back together. Those rectangle glaskets are a hoot but boil them to where they are plyable and with some lubricant you should be able to work in position, the corners are the most fragile. Good luck....

BEFORE you go any farther check the end play so you can adjust it later if needed.

If you just want the gear off remove the bolt holding it and then get another bolt much longer and screw into the hole. This will be a sacrificial bolt so plan to junk it afterwards. Put some wedges or chisels in under the gear to hold it up against the endplay then beat the heck out of that bolt I just had you put in there and it should pop right off.

Rob:

You'll either have to lift the pedestal upper housing off, or other split the unit in order to remove the vane bracket bolts, etc. Here's a pic:

Frank, If I take the 5 5/8 x 5 1/2 bolts out #24 in the picture this will let me make the split to get to the vane bolts? I've got the pedestal laying across a couple of saw horses. It also looks like the spindle is two piece, this is what allows to make that split?

Yes. 5 bolts go through to hold the pedestal to the frame, while 5 hold the rotary cylinder together. Remove the remaining 5 bolts, and the upper pedestal section can slide off the top.

No, that's a drafter's phantom line used to show the top end of an object and the remaining lower portion, with a repetitive area of insignificance in between. Like if you would illustrate a ruler, show the end at 1 and 2", then a double squiggly line, the 11 and 12", you're to think of this as a continuous object.

So, the parting line is the top surface of the cylinder. The top pedestal body goes up, then the cylinder can slide off, then remove the vane bracket, then the lower quill can come off. Stacked like a layer cake.

Frank
