JD Tech's need your help. What is the reason the digital tach's on the 55 series JD (4055-4955) put hrs on much faster that the old mechanical ones used from the 20-50 series? We plowed with a 4020 4 furrow plow and a 4055 5 furrow plow, and each tractor was used the same amount of time each day, and each tractor drove the same speed, and the elec tach would put double the hrs on that the mechnical one would. I have seen many of the 55 series tractors with higher hrs on them, I guess you can't go 100% by the hrs showing, all depends on how well each tractor is maintained.

TD I'm relatively positive that a 55 series will not rack up hours with the key left on as they have a speed sensor mounted on front of engine. I will check by turning on key on my 4255. It already has over 9500 hrs so one more won't hurt. Tx Jim

as already said, the 55 series show true hours. the mechanical tachs on the 20-30-40 series (50 series is like the 55) only show true hours at rated pto speed. in my opinion, the 50-55 series tachs are more reliable, but cost more to replace. the mechanical tach fluctuates way to much. our neighbor has a 4955 with 13,035 hours still on the original tach, now thats impressive. it currently reads 3,035. also TD,how do you like your 4055? i have been around three of them over the years, pretty much a bulletproof tractor from my experience. i know of one that was turned up to 155 horse, pulled hard, and was still going strong at 9,200 hours. i think the 55 series is deeres best tractors.

How does somebody get a naturally aspirated 466 turned up to 155HP ? Might get 125HP if you like smoke and high fuel consumption per HP/hr.

Maybe Mr. Know it all it is a 4055 with a 359 turbo engine . Look it up later 4055's had that motor.

Hey sonny, get back to school instead of playing on the computer. Granted there isn't much else to do in a back water abyss such as Lawrence Kansas.

buickanddeere and puke and beer, your both wrong. the 4055 isnt naturally-aspirated,it's turboed. also, they never had the 359, just the 6076. your thinking of the 4050. also buickanddeere,im guessing the tractor was just turned up,they can easily make 155 horse by turning the screw a little. most ran way more then 105 from new anyways.

I have no complaints with the tractor, absoultly one of the best ones Deere ever made. I am not so sure the hrs on a elec tach are more true, for eg, if the key is left on and the tractor not running it will rack up hrs, where as the older tachs won"t even run. I guess it's all how you look at it. Thanks for comments fellows, much appreicated.

Maybe the newer tachs measure metric hours!

Seriously, the old tachs were mechanical, and "racked up" the hours at a fractional rate any time the engine was running at less than rated RPM's.

I suppose the newer ones simply measure "true" hours of engine operation.

A funny side note...Back when I worked a a dealership we had several pieces of C&CE equipment that gained hours while the key was left on overnight. We had a TH Gator that had gained over 100 hours when the key was left on during a long weekend. Lucky for us a new hour meter oredered through parts solved the problem.

Like Bob says the hour meter on your old tractor is driven by a cable, the speed directly related to engine speed. The only time an hour equals an hour is while the tractor is at rated speed. So.. if rated speed is at 2000 RPM then running at 1000 RPM would take 2 hours of clock time to add one hour to the meter.
