Hi, I just purchased my first John Deere Tractor this week and am really excitted about it. I bought a model 60. I'm trying to find the serial number on it..... It looks as the tag is missing. I see two rivits kind of behind the clutch, and am assuming that's where the ID tag was. If the tag's missing, is there anywhere else on the tractor that Deere would have stamped the serial number. I know Farmalls have the numbers stamped into the engine block as well. Any help is appreciated! Thanks agian, Rob

Just a guess here but if you put a different tag on a tractor (I would sell it without a tag before I would do that) I don't think it is fraud "if" you tell the buyer it is not the correct tag. Also the replacement tags you get from Deere will not look anything like the original tag. Also the artical in 2-CYL about the tags said you would have to prove to the regional mgr. that the number you are requesting is the one that was on the tractor.
JohnT where are you?[/b]

If putting serial tags on is illegal, then why do they sell them new at John deere and reproduction places? If you should need one, they only make the serial plates for letter series tractors. You can't get them for a 1953 and later tractor yet. They will be coming out with them soon.

Go to the Two Cylinder magazine website. The current posting tells how to identify the casting date of, for example, a rear axle right down to the shift it was made on. At least with that info you'll know that your tractor was assembled after that date. So, if you have axles that were cast on May 15th of 1956 you'll know your tractor was built somewhat after that date.

If your 60 has the big holes in the rear wheels, it is a 1953. If it has factory power Steering it is a 1955 or 1956. 1955 is also when the fuel cap opening was moved to the left hand front part of the fuel tank. If that doesn't pinpoint it close enough, let me know. I'll look to see when the thermostat was moved. Probably more changes too, but off the top of my head thats a starting place. Good luck! Don

PS was introduced for the tail end of 1954 production in April.

Armed with the parts manual and plenty of looking. It maybe possible to narrow the tractor down to a number range of a dozen to a couple of hundred.

If your 60 has the large holes in the rear wheel cast iron it is 53 54 model after that JD when to the heavy cast center with the small round holes, If I am wrong maybe someone can correct me.
You may want to search the archives.
Good luck Ben

It's not that big of a deal for a 60 to not have a tag,it's not a rare tractor, but a great all around chore tractor,i sure wouldn't consider parting it out just because of a missing tag.

These "ID-less" tractors are parts tractors to me, but maybe not for you. If you want to fix it, then go for it, nobody'll hold it against you.

Good luck with your decision.

If the serial number plate is gone, there is no other place on the tractor where it is stamped. If having a plate is important to you, then sell your tractor and buy one with a plate. Installing a plate from a scrapped tractor is both illegal and unethical, but some people are dishonest enough to do that.

I dont think there is. That is why serial # tags have pretty good value to them. All you can do is look for one perferably the same year your 60 is, then rivit it on. What year is your 60? Good question huh..

Thanks Guys for all of your help this far!! I don't intend to take a tag from another tractor, I just would like to know what year it is for my own piece of mind. Here is what I do know:

1. No Power steering
2. It has ovel holes in the rear wheel centers, not perfectly round holes
3. The big difference I can notice looking at other 60's is the tag location. All of the 60's I've looked at lately are rivited to the side, twards the bottom of the trans, where mine was located on the top of the trans, more like a model A would be. Has anyone seen a 60 with a tag location like that?

Thanks again!! Rob
