Now that the hay season has ended and it's time to start fixing things, just looking to throw some symptoms out here to see what you folks have to offer. From the posts I've read this sounds like a helpful site.

Towards the end of the summer the tractor started slipping or hesitating real bad. It is a 78', hi-lo with 145 loader. Once the tractor was driven on the slightest incline, it would hesitate and even come to a stop, no matter if it was in hi-lo, under a load or not, or if the pto engaged/disengaged. I even noticed this is the lower gears, although not as pronounced as in 4-8. Again, it did the same whether in ho or lo.
The tractor has had a problem with the hydraulics freezing if sitting at idle for an extended period of time. Power steering, loader, rear remotes all freeze. Crank up the RPMS and they come back, although the loader would be very shaky/jumpy at first.
We changed the hydraulic filter and fluid, as well as the sump screen. Metal filings were found in the screen although not a lot, and it was quite clean otherwise.
I realize I may have quite a mess on my hands, unfortunately I don't have the resources ( time, shop) to work on it myself, but I'm interested in hearing what anyone else may have to share as far as similar symptoms and what ended up being the problem.

Thanks for any/all comments to this post!

Riverdale, It sounds to me as though you may have two different problems. The first is the main clutch is slipping and if the clutch pedal has freeplay your going to need a clutch job. From my Deere mechanic days I remember this as not too hard of a job on a 2640. They split pretty easy. All you need then is money to but new parts. The hydraulic problem sounds very familiar to me. I think you have a cracked hydraulic tube in the area of the controls for the power take off and the Hi-Low. These functions are supplied by the transmission pump which also charges the main Hyd pump. With a large leak caused by a cracked line , the transmission pump can't supply enough oil to charge the main pump and when you increase the rpm's the tranny pump makes a little more flow. To make a long story short your going to have to do a second split at the transmision and inspect those tubes carefully to find the broken one. Usually it's not to hard to find the culpuret. I would look for the Hyd problem before doing the clutch because it's possible with the transmission pump problem and possible leak that the Hi-Low clutch pack is not receiving enough flow so it slips. It may be to late if thats the case because those little clutch pack discs burn out fast if their slipping. Any way you have a fair amount of wrench twisting to do. Good Luck John

Remove the clutch inspection cover and see what you can see. Does the pedal have free travel? A slipping clutch produces a very distinct smell. The hydraulic problem could very well be the transmission pump getting weak, or one of the internal hydraulic tubes is cracked. Very common problem on this series. Fixing either of these problems will require splitting between the clutch housing and transmission housing. The good news is that you can go through the hi/lo while you're in there. You'll need to have the trans pump flow tested and have the main pump inlet pressure checked to get a better idea of what's going on, sounds like a full hydraulic test would be a good idea as well.

As for the tractor hesitating up an incline, it definitely sounds like your clutch is going out. In fact, that's the ONLY thing that can be happening based on your description. time to put a clutch in it!!

As for the hydraulics, it sounds like you have a weak primary transmission pump. Either that or a return valve is stuck open in the big pump.

You've got your work cut out for you this winter putting a clutch in it.
