Cganging Transmission oil in A

Will it hurt my 1937 A to change the transmission oil while it is running?

Was planning on driving around, mix up all the old stuff.

Drain it out and fill with kerosene to flush out. Drive in all the gears.

Drain and put new in.

Will this work or do I need to shut it off while I drain?

Thanks

I've read the operator manual to suggest jacking up one side of the tractor, add flushing solution, put it in gear and spin one tire while on blocks, jack stand, or whatever for a little while. Then drain and reflush or fill with new fluid.

If your old oil is that thick black stinky SCL type gear oil than it may be better off to leave it in there unless it is really contaminated.

They don't make any better protecting gear lube than that stuff. The EPA shut it down in the 1980's because of the lead.

I got some brand new GL-1 straight 140 weight gear oil to put in it. Which do you think is better?

Well after 70 years that oil could be bad ?

The oil you have is fine as you can't get the old stinky black stuff anymore. But that was the best at preventing corrosion on the insides and it would coat everything and stay there.

I've done the same thing. Don't worry too much about the lack of oil. Just drive it wround in a higher gear for about 3 or 5 minutes.

As for washing the oil off the bearings, that's what we're trying to do! it's got to be spotless and free of shavings...which can be found in even the tiniest amount of oil.

Rinsing trans with kerosene will help remove some of that built up crud. I would not drive it with it in there because you will wash oil off of 70 year old bearings. All the gunk will be in botttom of trans case anyway. As for it running while draining, kept clutch disengaged so this will prevent turning the shafts that drive trans. No reason to shut off, just pull in clutch. Be sure to check drained off oil for parts such as balls or pieces of cage off of bearings. You may find a problem this way before major problem. Good luck with your project, Jason.

I don't have it in front of me, but for some reason I'm remembering that the operator manual actually tells you to do what you are suggesting.

You should be fine, assuming you don't forget that you have kerosene in there and actually use it to do work. ;)
