What other hydraulic oil can I safely use in my 71 model 4320, besides John Deere's Hy-GARD oil.

It would be very hard to find that the oil caused the faliure. Unless some of your buddies are engineers, chemists, and a real good lawyer. That warranty is nothing but a sales gimick. 90% of the clutch pack and break failiures that we see in our shop have that oil in ther tractors. (Cenex Quicklift)

The pretty much sums it up, and I wouldn't put that junk oil in anything. Kind of amazing they'll "warranty" something based on nothing but the fact that you're using their oil, but yet when the companies that build the tractors warranty them, it's usually contingent on several conditions being met. Kind of like putting Deere PowerGard powertrain warranty on a used tractor - that requires an inspection, certain work to be performed, etc. etc. etc. But then again, Deere WILL stand behind their warranty when those conditions have been met. I'll bet the list of major powertrain failures that Cenex has ever paid up on would make for a pretty short list.

Cenex and farmland oil is good for squeeky door hinges. Pay a little now, but pay alot later.

Like I said before, I'm NOT a Cenex fan, in general. However, they have some TREMENDOUS warranties on equipment using their oil.

Think they could afford to do that, if the oil was no good???

Ever tried getting one of those warranty claims paid? Good luck, from what I hear, because there is so much fine print that goes along with it that it's next to impossible. Gotta kinda wonder why they find it necessary to offer a warranty like that if their product is so good. Seems like it should sell itself.

Hy-Gard is specced for your tractor and the interior components. The green HTB stuff from Co-op or whoever sells it these days is garbage when it comes to using it in a Deere - something about it doesn't jive too well with the friction materials Deere uses in their brakes, clutch packs, etc. 9 times out of 10 when we see a tractor with failed brakes (later tractors with the "paper" brake pads), it'll have that green junk in it. Hy-Gard is more expensive up front and cheaper in the long run.

So... in a real-world environment of several brands of tractors, and equipment using hydraulics swapped between them, what do you suggest???

Deere Hy-Gard when the hydraulic oil is changed in green tractors, and Hy-Gard is certainly as good or better than any other hydraulic/transmission oil out there and won't hurt any Brand X tractor I've ever come across. The couple of gallons an implement might contain in the various cylinders is a small percentage compared to a tractor that will hold anywhere from 10-30 gallons or even more in the case of a 4wd or large row-crop tractor. I come from a "real-world" family farm that was all red forever and ever, and when they started buying green iron, they started buying Deere Torq-Gard and Hy-Gard to put in it, even though there is still red iron on the place to this day. The red iron gets Hy-Tran and Archer engine oil. I've heard negative comments about Archer engine oil, but 12,000+ hours on a 1086 purchased new is kind of hard to argue with. And of course keeping up with oil and filter changes is a no-brainer.

Tim,

I'll bet 90% of the guys around here run generic UTF. I've NEVER heard of a problem with it, although I would buy a somewhat known brand, and look for it to be labeled as meeting Deere "specs".

I'm NOT particularly a CENEX fan, but that's a common UTF folks use around here. The darned stuff is even GREEN!

Think about it... if you have any other brand of tractor on the farm and share implements, a good dose of fluid will get mixed every time an implement gets "swapped" between tractors. Sticking with one brand of UTF keeps it all the same.

The nearest Deere dealer has HyGard for about $76.00 a pail, and "bulk" "Hygard" already they've already packed in pails you get to keep @ about $53.00 a pail.

It would be interesting to see what truck drops off the bulk oil. I've never heard of DEERE owning oil wells or refineries!

Thanks for your replies. Sounds like Hy-Gard is the only oil that want cause the brake linings to disintergrate.

I understand that maybe your John Deere dealer is so far away, and a maybe regular oil supplier is closer to you in Montana.

However, with fresh transmission oil change and flush and new filters, you will be in good shape for a long time... drive in confidence

don't use valvoline oil in ih tractors thats for sure. it will eat your pto clutces up. i wouldn't take a chance on anything but jd oil. grease and oil are cheaper than steel.

Probably any oil that claims to meet the same standards as Deere Hytran. But if the brakes get noisy and you find bits of brake pad in the filter the alternative oil my prove to be unreasonably expensive.
