Using 15W-40 in Unstyled A

Should I be using a diesel rated oil in my old tappet engine because of the additives in the oil?

I have been running generic 10W-30 but according to the manual it is too thin for the temperatures that I use this tractor in. The 15W-40 looks like it would get me the range that I want.

What do you guys think about the additives and which oils are best for these older tappet engines in general?

Thanks for any help.

Around here, on working farms, about anything with an engine gets the same oil... quality 15-40 diesel-rated oil.

Ain't gonna hurt nothin', except to offend the tree huggers that have forced the elimination of anti-scuff additives from gas engine oil.

I agree with Bob. Anything that is a little wore out around here (bigger than a lawn mower) gets 15W 40 shell rotella T right out of the barrel. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, except in our 10 degree winters, we don't even try to crank 'em!!
