When I first started it this spring it ran perfect for about a minute. It would not restart. Discovered lots of water in fuel system.(Not for sure how water got into system yet, as I purchased it this winter). Anyway, I drained fuel tank and replaced with new fuel, replaced fuel filter, removed injector pump and shook out fuel (didn't take it apart). I had a hard time removing injector pump and reinstalling it. I then removed injectors and cranked engine to be sure no water had went thru injectors (no water came out). Once everything was reconnected and primed the engine finally started, it ran rough and smoked excessive. After setting overnite, I discovered deisel fuel in the crank case. I then removed injection pump and and discovered I had damaged the seal which keeps the deisel from entering the engine. I then replaced both seals on the injection pump shaft and changed the oil and filter. Now, it still runs rough and smokes alot but intially it will run for about 3 minutes then just quits. After the first time it quits if I let it set for a few minutes it will start briefly then quit. I'm going to replace fuel filter for starters. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

is it starting real hard?if this is the case,it could be the timing is 180 degrees off. when you have the pump off you will see a dot on the end of the injection pump shaft and also in the injection pump.these need to be aligned when the pump is installed.also you may want to remove the check valve in the top of the injection pump where the return line fastens to the pump.if it is clogged with dirt, clean it out, reinstall, and it should be okay.if it is clogged with rubber or plastic-like material,ti means the governor ring went out in the pump.if this is the case,it will still run rough and smoke blue.good luck

Thanks a million! You were right it was 180 degrees off time. As for the check valve, it seems to be dirty with the rubber or plastic-like material you refered to? Where is the governor ring located and can I replace it? Also, after cleaning the check valve I can still blow thru it in both directions. Should I replace it too? Again, Thanks for all your help. It is very much appreciated! Steve

the governor ring is located inside the injection pump.it will need to be removed from engine for this procedure.the injection pump will need to be dissassembled.
first remove top cover of pump
second, the throttle linkage will need to be removed.oyu will see a clip similar to an eclip on throttle shaft.pull it off, remove shaft.
third, remove spring under throttle shaft by removing bolt towards rear of pump.alsoremove metering valve,it is the little lever the spring hooks into.
fourth, remove three plugs from bottom of pump take care as the two facin each other will have springs behind them.after removing smaller plug facing down you will see a ball-like bolt with a torx head.this requires a special wrench for removal.
fifth, remove the two other boltsthat hold it together, one on either side towards rear of aluminum housing on pump.pump should now slide apart, and you will see goernor ring.
if you do not feel comfortable performing this operation, you may want to have an injection pump shop take a lok at it.also for more info you could search archives on this subject.good luck

After pulling the injector pump and correcting timing 180 degrees and cleaning the return line check valve she seems to run perfect again, even the smoke is gone! I just can't thank you enough. Maybe someday I will be able to help someone else in need. May God Richly Bless You and Yours.
Thanks, Steve
