When I get ready to install the new head gasket, should I soak it in oil or not, and how long should I soak it, if I have to? I am going to be taking the block out and what about the gasket between the block and main case, should that one be soaked or not? How much torque for the block and main case nuts? Thanks in advance for any help

I just put a block and head on my 51 B. The service manual (which comes in very handy) says to soak the gaskets for 30 seconds. That is what I did. It helps to seal it. I don't know about the 37 B, but the 51 B torque is on the block was 120 ft lbs, if I remember correctly. The head was a little less I think, like a 100 ft lbs.

I just called the guy today, but he hasn"t started trying to push the old tubes out yet. I am kind of getting anxious to get it together. I am thinking of taking the block out and replacing the gasket between the block and main case. I have to call Deere first and see if they still stock a gasket for it, before I take it apart. I have an unstyled AR that has an oil leak from the main case and block, and sense I have this one torn apart this far it would foolish not to put in a new gasket. I am hoping to do an every nut and bolt restoration on this B I am working on. If you could get me the torque on everything that would be great, I would really appreciate it.

there is no need to soak the gaskets in oil we just overhauled a 36 B. nor do u need to soak the gasket in between the block and crank case. just make sure you inspect the head and make sure the psuh rod tubes dont have holes in them or you will get water in the crank case. i just had that problem. as for torque specs i think its 80ft/lbs but dont quote me

Thanks for your help. I am waiting for the head to come back. I was suppose to pick it up last Mon, but the guy realized that the push-rod tubes had little pin holes in them, so I ordered 4 new ones from Deere. Just waiting for a call to pick it up!!
