electrolysis question

I have been reading about electrolysis, and I am wondering if I could use an old fuel oil barrel cut down? I have one that is 1/4 filled with water, and I already have a drain on the bottom of the tank. I would like to cook a hood for an unstyled B and D, so the fuel oil barrel would work great if it will work.

Rob:

I generally use a non-conductive container because the electrolyte salts can be pretty rough on the steel of a drum. You can take the barrel out of the mix if you insulate it from the sacrificial electrode(s), or better yet, connect it to the part you are cleaning. That way, the barrel and the part will try to gain iron, not give it up. Be sure you'll need plenty of surface area because you have both the barrel and the part to clean. You may need to ajust the mix so that you keep the amp draw under the cut out point of your power supply since you are working both sides of the electrode this way.

Thanks for the respnse, I tried to get into your web site, but I couldn"t get in, it kept telling me the page was unavailable. So I went on the Farmall Cub web site and read alittle bit about how to set it up, and I am interested in trying it. I guess I"ll try a 5 gal bucket to start with and see how it works!
