Hi I'm mew to the JD forum, usually post over on the Case board. We have a bunch of 2 cyl. tractors and we are starting to sell some. We have a 1960 430 utility w/a detroit harvestor/john deere mid mount sickel bar mower. Now we have owned this tractor for about 10 years, and always noticed yellow paint under the green. After taking numerous parts off (hood, grill, shifter quadrant, and some other things) we scraped through the yellow to bare steel. Surely no one would have taken this much time years ago to take everything down to bare metal, then paint ind. yellow and then pint in ag colors again? The tractor when we purchased it was in used condition and I would say that it had been Green and yellow for quite a long time. We got a 2 cyl. club serial tag report for it, and it doesn't mention industrial paint. any help would greatly appriciated. Thanks!! Brian

I don't know if JD was priming the tractors at that time before painting.

Yellow primer is common on the 420 series.

If it was a custom job from the factory is would have a custom job 256 number for the yellow paint
in the serial number reasearch. If it was sold through the industrial division, yellow was a standard color,so there wouldn't be anything recorded special.

I reversed the number, the yellow was custom job 265.I've got a 1010 that was factory yellow with no mention in the serial number reasearch.

It was probably sold through the industrial division and just painted yellow. It would have been cheaper to buy than an industrial for the county, township, etc that purchased it.This was a brighter yellow than the primer they used, some
were not primed at all.
