Previous owner of my 50 gave it a fly by night paint job. My fault,I bought the tractor. The serial # tag is also painted over,he said he used hardner in the paint. What chemical or solvent can I use to remove the paint from the tag and not ruin it. It is a brass tag. thanks

Go with MEK. Alcohol, acetone, oven cleaner are going to take a lot longer.

hey here;s a tip, i just refinished my mt and the owner before me painted over my tag as well.
take some carb and choke cleaner on a rag and use swirling motion when you rub the tag. it takes a little effort, but it absolutely harms nothing as long as you keep it on the tag. if your tag has the oruginal black finish under the paint, it will make it look used but not abused and give it a vintage look. on my mt i shot the tag with a satin black and after rubbing it with the carb cleaner, it exposed all of the natural factory shinny lines, and left the satin black for a nice vintage look.

Most any solvent, thinner or carb cleaner will soften it enough to come off but laquer thinner or MEK should take it right off but be careful and mask off well what you don't want it on. Oven cleaner will work well too but don't leave it on tag too long. Plastic scouring pad or fine scotch-brite will shine up the tag and acrylic clear coat will protect it. Yeah I hate those kind of paints jobs and the H I bought was done that way with cheap green that turns a blue shade later.
