I finally got spark to it. I got it running again today and know when it runs, it is blowing black smoke and will not throttle up. It was running pretty good the other day and haven"t done anything to the carb, fired it up today and it doesn"t want to go. I haven"t cleaned the carb much outside of getting some the rust and goo out of the bowl. I would just like to know if anyone thinks I have a carb issue or a governor issue. The tractor runs fine at idle,(except for the black smoke), but when I give it some throttle it will slowly idle up to 1/4 throttle, but when I give it some choke, it will idle up almost all the way until it starts to flood out. I have the idle need about 1 1/2-2 turns out and I have to have the load needle closed right off, if I move the load needle it will die. I just want to know why all of a sudden I have no throttle, when it was working fine the other day. Thanks

I just went through all this with my '46, doing EXACTLY what yours is doing, right down to the carb settings. The intake stack was FULL of mud dauber nests. Had to take the intake all apart and use high pressure water & air, took about an hour to get it all cleaned out. You have to remove the hood, which requires removing the steering shaft, to take the stack & air cleaner off.

To check if the intake IS the problem, take the cup off the bottom of the air cleaner. If it runs better, your intake stack is plugged.

At the same time, I cleaned the idle passages in the carb out. They were rusted up. Go to>Link

My A is now running like a NEW Deere!

Just had the same problem the other day on a 37 Model A i removed the float bowl and removed the nozzle from the carb and found some rust and drugs in the nozzle area. I removed this and cleaned the glass bowl out and then sandblasted the rest of the rust off and put her back together and she runs like a charm now. Mine would idle fine but like you said you could not get it to take throttle unless you had the choke about 2/3 on. Hope this helps a little.

Rob,
First I would check the fuel level in the carb bowl by going to a hardware store and buying a 1/8" hose barb, with a foot or so of clear plastic tubing which fits over the barb. Remove the bowl drain and replace it with the hose barb. Put the plastic on, hold it up along side the bowl and turn the fuel on with the tractor off. The fuel level should settle in at 3/4" below the top of the bowl. If it is higher, you need to figure out why - I would check the float (shake it - if you hear fuel sloshing replace it) or put it in very hot water - the air in the float will pressurize and leave a stream of bubbles in the water as it leaves the float. If all that works, and you still have a high fuel level, check the float position (hold the bowl upside down and the top of the float should be about 1/2" from the top of the bowl). Next would be the needle and seat - try cleaning it - you may have a piece of trash from the fuel tank preventing the needle from seating.

OK thanks for the input Duane, I will try it and see what happens.
