I have been working on a 47 a with a wico c mag. It started for the first time in 7 years the other day and ran fairly well. I drove it up the road and ran out of gas. Got it running and then it started to spit and sputter and just up and quit. I tried pulling it to start it, but with no luck, then I checked for spark and no spark. I put in a new rotor condenser and points, and had spark for alittle while. Tried pull starting it again, it fired a few times, and ran, but was blowing black smoke and then quit, now I have no spark again. Maybe a weak spring? The person I bought the tractor from took the coil out of the mag and was too tight to buy a coil for it, so he drilled a hole in the side of the mag and put a 12 volt car coil on it. Thanks for the help

The last Wico C coil I bought cost 60.00.Patchwork mechanic work dosent do well most of the time.Have the condenser tested,An old time radio man can do this for you.New import condensers tend to be junk.An external 6V coil will work if your condenser is good.

Rob,
Does your B have the original 6V electrical system? If so, you need a 6V coil, not a 12V. Does your '47 have a square seat? If so, and it is below s/n 217798 it came with a Wico C. They are rebuildable and a rebuild, even with a new coil, should be much less than a new XH - which is a fine magneto if you decide to go that route.

Finally, the failure rate of new condensers is higher than it should be, so if you can find one from a working Wico C to try it might be worth your effort.

Rob -- From the story you tell of that magneto, my first impression is to ditch the WICO C at a cost of around $300 for a new WICO X magneto. The WICO C magnetos are all nearing a minimum of 60 years old, and many have been treated with no respect! Parts are getting more costly by the day and some I know aren't too anxious even to work on them! Repair or replace -- that is the issue. And the issue is probably a $100 (or less) bullet you should consider taking a bite at. (PatB)
