I changed the fuel filter (Final Water Seperator) and re-opened the fuel line valve & bled the air out of the system. The tractor ran for about a minute and a half and then died.

I changed the filter because recently it has been surging and stalling occasionally.

The tractor will not start now. I have tried repeating the bleeding process to get any air out of the system and still no luck. Any Ideas?

I tried re-bleeding the system. Still Nothing. Good Call on the vent hose I pulled off the slow triangle emblem and the hose had dry rotted and fallen off and the plastic piece was filled with gunk.

However, I had a mechanic look at it and he said it was the injection pump. I called the Deere place and they wanted $2,100.00 for a new one or it will take two weeks to rebuild my current one for $400 to $600.00.

Oh well, with the exception of one starter a few years back this has been a very reliable tractor. It has 2840 hours on the clock.

Thanks for your help and I will keep you updated as this progresses. Thanks Again!!!

I have a 5400 that was giving me fits of surging and stalling and finally quit. I tried to bleed lines and anything else on it and found that I was not getting fuel. The mud dobbers had stopped the vent line behind the slow moving emblem and the tractor was starving for fuel as it would create a vacuum in the fuel tank. After a lot of heartache I called the service mgr. of our local Deere dealer and told him what I had found. He said maybe that is the answer to several others that we are having problems with.

Bleed it again until no air comes out of that bleed screw. Loosen all the injector lines a little (maybe 1/2 turn) at the injector. Keep cranking it until fuel comes out every injector line- til it runs down (only crank maybe 15 seconds at a time... if the starter gets hot to the touch, let it cool down). Tighten the lines, start it up.
