Due to lack of free time and health reasons, the old "A" must go. She hasn"t been run for about a year. One battery wouldn"t hold a charge. Replaced battery, starter won"t turn over. Seems totally dead. Any ideas? She"s going to be sold at my in-laws auction on the 19th. Thanks!

You said replaced 1 battery so I assume you have 2 in there ? If you have a late a using 2 6 volts to make 12 then just 1 good 12V is all you need. Your 1 old battery may be zapping all the juice from the new one. But first check to see if the engine is locked up. Sometimes those can have the starter actuating rod touch the battery cable underneath the fylwheel cover. this will send the juice to ground and not the starter. Worth a check.

Rob, I think I would remove the flywheel cover n see if you can get the engine to turn over very easy (may be stuck as Duane suggested). With a good battery n good tight connections if it has any lights see if they work and then when you try n start her see if they dim way down badly (engine may be stuck or starter bad) but if theres no change then Id suspect the starter switch and/or the ground or other cable n battery connections (but could still be bad starter like worn brushes). If you cant turn the engine over at the flywheel using drivers or bars at the flywheel you might try to pull her in high gear and ease the clutch in to see if she will turn just a little BUT CAUTION if theres a valve stuck that could bend a pushrod !!!!! !!!!! !!!!

If she wont turn by hand or with a pry bar/driver at the flywheel I would remove the plugs and fill the cylinders with Diesel Fuel and Auto Tranny Fluid and Brake Fluid for a day or so and remove the valve covers and loosen or remove the rocker shaft so you wont bend the pushrods and then see if the engine will free up. If it does then try n work the valves to see if they all close down and are free,,,,, ,,drain the crankcase n refill with oil n change the filter,,,,, reassemble the valves n rockers and set the valve lashes,,,,, ,,,,,clean n purge the gas tank and sediment bowl and carb bowl and air cleaner,,,,, ,,insure a good spark at both plugs,,,,, ,,insure good tight battery n ground and starter n switch connections,,,,, ,,,SEE WHAT HAPPENS THEN????? ?????

SUMMARY I would just try n determine if its stuck by seeing if the flywheel will turn just the slightest bit and be aware of any stuck valves might bend a pushrod but if shes all free but wont crank then take a look at the starter switch and all the battery n ground n starter connections to see why the starter wont crank her over.

If it ran just a year ago and wasnt set out in the rain with an open exhaust theres a good chance its only minor stuck to the extent the starter wont crank her (like if lights dim way dwon and starter n switch are both okay) but a lil flywheel pry might be all she needs???

Let us know

Rob,
Sounds like the engine has set up so the starter can't turn it. You don't say the year of the A, so if the starter is enclosed you can measure the voltage across the battery when the starter is engaged, and if the voltage drops any the starter is getting current. If not, figure out where the bad wire/ground is.

If the engine is stuck, do an archive search on stuck engine and you will find MUCH discussion on freeing one up.
