My neighbor has a 1940 H. It has fenders that are in very good condition, the sheat metal is average, with the one grill bent some, it has shutters, it also has rear wheel weights, the tires are 10 years old, but is outside in the weather all the time, so they are checked some. He said that it pops out of gear sometimes, and he thinks that maybe the head gasket is staring to weep abit. It has no pto or hydraulics and is hand start. I don"t really know what to offer him for it.

If it sets out all the time it's a safe bet the tranny is full of water. Look closely at the bottom of the tranny case on the downward slope because in freezing climates these tend to break from all that water that gets in there freezing.

I was never able to get more than $3000 out of a "turn key "( more correctly turn flywheel ) H with good tires and paint.

Sale in Verona WI last December had 2 H's. One had half a cultivator and PTO and the other had a full cultivator with hydraulic lift. Neither was started at the auction and they each brought 1900 dollars.

Paid $1500 for '41 H two years ago. Has electric start, PTO and hydralics. Was runnig but smoking real bad. Had to almost completely rebuild it. No fenders. Will be finished if I ever get magneto back from being repaired. He has had it 6 weeks and I still don't have it back.

Rob -- Take a stroll over to the JD-H Restoration Site and once there, click on the BUYER'S GUIDE over on the left-hand side. While the range of prices is wide, value is what you are looking for and in the guide are the things of value to look for. Fenders are a big plus so long as they aren't beat all to pieces. The hood is the other because it needs to be at least reparable -- after-market hoods out there yet!

Location is the other main factor. While I haven't traveled much with regard to JD-H tractors, I believe your location is more a buyer's market than other areas of the country. Not having viewed the tractor, to put a starting offer amount in this post would be folly on my part. I reckon I would begin a little low, and then creep up on it. If you can locate a JD tractor buff in your local area, that too would be helpful. Enjoy! (PatB)

Just to help you compare with the previous reply, I bought a '45 H, hand start, no pto or hydraulics, no fenders, engine that ran well but smoked a little, and had decent tin for $2300. I agree that is the fenders are in good shape, that is an asset.

Just bought a '42 H electric start, lights, very straight tin, loose but not running and for the most part complete for $1200
If the fenders are in very good condition it could add 600-800 dollars to the price. Hope this helps.
