Amoung other problem's I've been having with my old tractor now when I fire her up she tend's to smoke heavier than normal from the exhaust, and would like to know what could be the cause? I don't run her all that often, maybe once or twice a year? So was thinking maybe something to do with the air cleaner and the oil I have in there perhap's? Use regular 10-30 motor oil filled to the right level according to my manual. And the smoke is gray not blue or white or even black, for those thinking she's running much too rich. Not a serious problem I don't think, but thought I'd throw it out there and see what other more experianced tractor lover's think? Thank's.

The color of the smoke is the most important aspect for troubleshooting at least, thanks for including that all too often overlooked item.

Gray could be water. You need to check the water level in the radiator first off to make sure none is getting away there. If the color of the oil is a tad bit brown you might have condensation issues that come from non-use.

You run it "maybe once or twice a year"? Sounds almost like you don't know these old gals not only like to be taken out and worked to death, but they actually need it to keep them from chuffing smoke of all colors. Maybe you are just not treating her right? All kidding aside, this is REAL issue and the most likely reason for your smoke.

The air cleaner is probably not the issue unless water has run down into the intake stack and 'filled' the oil reservoir about half way up. They usually then leak away all the oil leaving just water in such cases. My bet is she just needs a real good work out.

i was just curious as to how old the gas in it is. they tell me that gas is good for about 30 days and it start degrading after that. i always keep gas stabilizer in my small engines things in the winter for that reason. i also keep it in my jd because i don't crank it much either. if your gas is old i'd drain it out and put some fresh in and you may have to run it a long while to clean out the old gas from carb. you may even have to take it off and give it a good cleaning.

Thank's for the reply's guy's, and I know your probably right, I don't run the old girl near often enough. The gas was just bought and filled in right before firing her up this last time. So this at least shouldn't be an issue. As for water in the air cleaner, I doubt this is the case as I've kept her completely covered and out of the weather using an old highway tractor trailer tarp. And only removed it prior to the firing of the machine. Guess it's still possible for rain water to have seeped in somehow, but I don't think so? Probably just need to run the bug's out of her system, and actually work her hard for a while as suggested by one of you guy's, and I would except tire issue's and lack of capital keep me from doing so, for the time being? And it'll be some time before either situation is likely to change? This was one of my Dad's machines
's from his collection of around twentyfive tractor's he'd kept on the farm. And with this many of the thing's kept on the property it was inevitable some of them wouldn't get the attention they may have needed all the time? Seem's this particular old A sat for many year's unattended? And she's pretty well only seen any use at all after Dad passed away and I kept her from being sold with the other's at our family auction. She's in fairly decent shape but does need a bit of work and replaced part's before she'd be ready to work all day, and I just haven't had the money.
