I have spotted an original 4020 JD on propane that has a correct 900 and some odd hours on the clock. Roughly, what is this tractor worth and is it desirable. I'm asking because he said it is for sale but hasn't quoted me a price yet. I love to play with tractors and would like to buy it, play with it a year or so and sell it but I know nothing about a 4020 on propane. I've only seen it from a distance and it looks great. Assuming it is straight, strong and without any major mechanical problems, what's she worth? Thanks. |

With propane selling for maybe ? around 1/2 price of both gas and diesel then they may make a comeback.

fixitforfree,I'm very skepical that a somewhere around 40 year old tractor only has 900+ original hours on it. This would average out to about 25 hrs./year. I would want owner to tell me some more info. It's not unusual for tachometer/hourmeter to quite working and a brand new one be installed with zero hours.JMHO,Tx Jim

I work with the guy that owns this tractor. The tractor came from the Texas panhandle and this fellows grandfather bought it new. He says the hours are original and as it did very little farming in the Texas Panhandle. Says they are asking $6500.

Hmmmm, Still hard to believe since no field is small here. Who would own such a tractor and never use it? For that price you should have it bought by now and sitting in the barn at home.

If it's a late model 4020 LP with side console or power shift it would be more desirable as less later ones made. Nothing wrong with them. Some just don't have the equipment to fuel one with or had a bad experience with LP systems and don't like them. Not everyone having a way to refill them seems to make LP tractors in some areas bring less and 4020 LPs aren't going to bring what diesels do but still good tractors to use. Saw about 15-20 3010, 4010, 3020, 4020 LP tractors sell at consignment auction in winter and they all brought above average price I thought and some were kind of rough too. If it runs strong and has good tires and really has low hours would be a good one. What year? Hard to believe it doesn't have a lot more hours on it than that. Like a gasoline 4020 if you are really going to work it hard it will be be thirsty too and you'll be better off finding a diesel.

don't know what meyers problem with LP 4020s is. We have one, had it for 5 years. never had a problem with it. If the one you are looking at is LP with a power shift, they are scarce.

Being its an LP 4020, I wouldnt shake a stick in its direction. In my book, I wouldnt want to be given this tractor. Up to you, i guess...

It's all personal opinion, but from a collector standpoint, but several of the LP New Gen tractors are going to be among the rarest built. I prefer diesel myself, but given current fuel prices, if I had to pick between an LP and a gasoline tractor, it would be a no-brainer.

Why? Do you just not like Propane tractors or is there something specifically bad about the 4020 Propane models? Thanks for any comments. I am just wondering what these units were like- pros, cons, etc.

I have a 3010 LP which I"ve owned for 10 years. Before that I had one just like it for nearly that long. Before that I had a 720 LP for several years. They"ve all been very reliable tractors. I sometimes go a month or two without using mine, and I don"t have to worry with treating the fuel. The one thing I don"t like about 4020 LP"s is having the fuel tank sticking up above the hood at the front of the tractor. Butch
