I've got a 2040 as well that had the same problem, I took it the the john deere dealership three times and they could not fix it, I finally decided to fix it my self. The steering column has six small orings internally on the valves and when it is reassembled you have to put it together slowly and with alot of high temp grease on the orings so they don't tear. I finally got it working.

i have a 2130 and had the same problem in the steering column there is a valve that was out of place and it just above the sttering mechanism

it was rather ridiculous price so i had it welded in place instead that was what the mechanic at the deere dealer said to do

that might be the problem?

I"d like to have some info on this also. My 2040 has some binding back and forth in the steering. I know it"s in the gear box or hydraulics...have replaced all the other parts. We need an expert in the field. Also I"m still trying to figure the difference in the 2040 and 2240, one person said it was only the injector pump. Any comments appreciated.
