Which magazine do some of you subscribers like better, Green Magazine or Two-Cylinder Magazine? I am considering getting a subscription and although I would like both they are both somewhat expensive subscriptions. I need the money for my projects. Any opinions appreciated.
Thanks

I have 3 two cylinders and I always liked them even though I grew up on a farm that had International Harvester tractors(I restored 2 of them for my brother), so I'm a Two Cylinder guy...but I take Green Magazine too. GM has good stuff and comes monthly which I like, but for me Two Cylinder has more useful info. most of the time.

I get both magazines and enjoy them both. Their may be some subjects that I don't care about, but I keep ALL my issues,Because some of them have good info on things I need to be refreshed on.
They both come due at the same time(2 yrs) and I just bite the bullet and get them.
Green Magazine are ALWAY sent to me on difference dates, anywhere from the 3rd to the 10th of the month. Wish they would get their act together and delivery date locked down. My 2 cents ...Ben

Just to comment on seeing New Gen tractors, combines and the like in Two-Cylinder - I don't see why that's a problem. Most people that subscribe to GM probably also subscribe to T-C, and both are good publications. And if you've subscribed for several years to both, you probably seen an article on just about every two-banger to ever roll off the line. Obviously "Two-Cylinder" would seem to suggest only two-banger TRACTORS, but let's not forget that it took and still takes a heck of a lot more than just a tractor to farm, and that there were other machines on the farm doing as much or more work. Also, both mags have to try and keep drawing new subscribers. The ranks of farmers that grew up on two-bangers get smaller every day, and there are many younger farmers that came of age on New Gen or even newer tractors. I think it's a little ridiculous to want to try and stop the history of farm equipment at 1960, especially when dealing with John Deere, which has made so many huge advances since then. But maybe someday when I'm an old-timer and they're farming with robotic nuclear-powered space tractors or whatever, I'll long for a good article on those "antique" 8400s, lol.

I bet if both magazines were to run only articles on 2 cylinder tractors and nothing else they would loose interest. I really don't understand why some people are against the NG tractors and combines in these magazines. I kinda get sick and tired of nothing but 2 cylinders. Besides I don't know why anybody would want to know more then whats already in the JR Hobbs books and parts books.

I agree. I read anything by J.R. word by word multiple times, as I think he is just about the best I've read, and he can present good facts without it being dry and uninteresting. His hands-on experience as a farmer help a bunch, as well. I don't understand why even as years and years go by, the definition of "antique" farm equipment never seems to be revised. It seems like it's always been pre-1960. I think a '52 "A" has probably been considered an antique for 20-30 years now, and we now have 3010s and 4010s that are 45+ years old that are considered "too new" to be antiques. I just don't get it.

Well we get at my house Green Magazine, Two Cylinder, and Antqiue Power. My self I like Green Magazine for there New Generation articles but they do have a lot of adverritsments over 10 pages of them. Two Cylinder is good if oyu like alot of different things my favorite one is the one of the special crop things that John Deere made but thet to have alot of advertisments. So go with Green Magazine.

I subscribe to Two Cylinder and enjoy it very much. But, I am worried that it is moving away from the two cylinders. More and more New Generation, combines, etc. And the Nov - Dec issue was a major disappointment. Must have been an easy issue to publish during the holidays! It had lots of interesting ads, but NO tech articles. And I usually have a little more reading time around the holidays, but no articles to read! So, I purchased Green Magazine and was very impressed. I have started buying GM at TSC and really enjoy it also. It would be a tough choice to say which is better.

I recieve both and think that they compliment each other. In more recent years, the two cylinder has started to put more substance its magazine and is not just a bunch of pictures. Un fortunately it is bimonthly, while Green is monthly. I think if you are going to use the ads to purchase tractors, there is more of this in Green. In a pinch, buy one and get your local library to subscribe to the other.

In short; if you want great pictures go with Two Cyldr; if you want information go with Green Mag. I've had them both and kinda like Antique Power the best. Only problem is it only comes every two months.

Mr. Thinker's applied attitude is for entertainment only. It's not for everyone.

Both are great but 2/cyl has not been as good lately. The nov-dec issue was the worst ever. It only contained Advertising ads from the past. This is fine, however there was no articles at all....easy issue for the editor! And the new generation does seem to be their trend. I would say no other mag. compares in the quality. More like a book than a mag. If you can afford, get both....

I get 2 Cyl, Green Magazine AND antique power. I'd be hard pressed to let any of them go, but if I had to get only 1, it would probably be two cylinder. I constantly go back through back issues when I get a new tractor to find articles w/ specs, production #s and the like. Green magazine has had those more so lately, and I would hate to give it up...It is a really difficult decision. Green magazine has also been featuring some crappy stuff lately...last issue was on earthmovers....industrial stuff that isn't even GREEN! BUT, I like Mr Thinker, despite his smartaleck answers. I gain a lot of info there, and it comes monthly... Two cylinder recently started adding a section of reprinted service bulletins which can be invaluable info.....like I said, its a tough decision.

Here's some pros and cons:

Pro's:
Green magazine...
1. articles featuring specific models
2. great ads w/ lots of pictures
3. Greg Stephens articles on NOS parts and literature
4. comes monthly
5. nice photos
6. Mr Thinker has some good info
7. Restoration articles and tips by various authors
Cons:
1. Mr thinker's attitude
2. too many fluff letters about grandpa's tractor
3. Hard to find back article on specific models
4. Industrial tractor stuff and new generation stuff.
5. Lawn mower articles...geez.

Two Cylinder
Pros:

1. In depth articles on specific models
2. model discussed is on front cover..easy to information on your current project
3. reprints of service bulletins EXCEPTIONAL!
4. lots of good ads for commercial vendors
5. pretty decent letters and technical questions answered
6. much thicker than before...lots of good reading.
7. Great archival photos used w/ articles.

Cons:
1. bimonthly publication...long dry spell between issues
2. starting to see new generation stuff...and combines..
3. seems a little pretentious sometimes. ...almost elitist in some ways.

As the others have said, if you can get both, its worth it. They are very close in balance of quality and content. But that's just MY opinion.

SgtBull,

Out of curiousity, What's wrong with industrial tractors? I've found the industrial articles interesting myself. Deere has been making yellow tractors since 1935, and is still going in the industrial market if you hadn't noticed. Take a look at my website see if you find anything interesting. www.weirddeere.com

On the magazine issue. It'd be tough to give up either one!

Brandon

Two-cylinder isn't just two cylinder anymore. Seems like combines have been the rage lately. I've been somewhat disappointed this last year. I don't know about green mag. but I'm going to look into it if this continues.

I get both and would hate to have to make a decision on just one. They both have their good and not so good points in different ways. Why not try both for a year and then decide which is best for you.

I get both and also Antique Farm Power. Green comes monthly which I like, but my buddy quit Green because of the smart azz coments by Mr. Know it all in the back. 2 cyl is a very high quality mag, comes every other month, I like it but have no interest in new generation John Deere and it is creeping in. Antique power is also bi monthly and it covers all kinds of tractors with some good stories. Its always exciting to get one.

"Mr. Know-it-all" aka Mr. Thinker is WHY I subscribe to Green Mag. Must be your buddy asked him a question that could have been answered by looking in his tractor manual and Mr. Thinker ripped him and now he has a grudge about it!

Gotta admit he is entertaining!

I did not say I did not like Mr. Thinker. My buddy never sent in a question, he did not like the attitude enough to quit taking it. Both have lots of info, and when they come, I drop everything and read them. John
