Can anyone tell me the proper way to adjust the tappets on a 1927 D? The only thing the manual tells me is just before the left valve opens, when all the levers are free turn the screw in until there is no play and then back it off a 1/4 turn. I had one different valve put in so 1 is out alittle farther then the others. All I need is a step by step beginning to end of how to do this right, what I need to look for and do. Thanks

Yes Glen,it is a nice sound especially when you work on something so long, almost a year and a half, off and on. I had it running and then for some reason my mag quit sparking to the left side, so one of my friends, took my mag and changed the condenser and recharged the magnet, and finally had spark again, then it wasn't running quite right, I couldn't find the spot to where all the valve would be free, until you said to move it 90 degrees from the timing marks, it sure does sound sweet. I'll tell you what, I won't ever forget the look on my dads face when it fired up, we have put in many hours on this tractor, then when you go to start it and it just doesn't want to run, its a good kick in the shorts ya know. Anyway Glen, I want to thank you for all the help you have given me over the last few months on this D, my dad and I sure appreciate what you have done for us, so we owe you a big THANK YOU!!
Have a good day

Rob, I agree with Duane on going the JD manual instructions. The feeler guage method doesn"t always work for everyone. If you"re still having problems to get valves timed right do what it tells you to time the camshaft in the JD D manual. Doesn"t take that long just to check it and then you know you"re right on the valve setting.

Rob,
Go with the instruction manual directions. Remove the spark plugs and rotate the flywheel until the piston on the flywheel side comes up on compression (you can tell by holding your thumb over the plug hole - you will feel pressure) and the "impulse" casting on the flywheel will line up with the timing mark on the transmission case. Then continue to rotate the engine another 90 degrees after #1 passes top dead center, and all the tappets should be loose on the valves. Tighten each screw one at a time until it is snug against the valve, then back off 1/4 turn and lock down. This ensures the proper clearance, independent of valve wear.

If you try to use a feeler gauge you can get inaccurate results if there is any wear in the tappet head where it hits the valve, and the feeler gauge is wider than the wear in the tappet.
