I finally got it running, but it is popp"n alittle unusual. Sometimes it almost has a kind of squeek as it pops. I don"t have a rebuilt mag or carb (new gaskets and brass float for the carb). It ran fine when I started restoring it. I am going to get some new plugs and try, it already has new plug wires. Tried adjusting carb, doesn"t really change anything. My dad adjusted the valves according to the book, so I don"t know what is left to try, outside of the carb. How would it run of the plug wires would be backwards??

Rob I think that squeek you are hearing is a sticking valve, the squeek is the valve opening and then it sticks and then you hear the pop due to a open valve, been there, are you sure oil is getting to the valves via the oil pipe? and was all the holes open on the valve stem oiler? If so there is probley a burr on the valve guide or a slightly bent valve and is causing that valve to stick some, sounds like a exhaust valve if you are hearing it out the stack. Make sure it is getting proper oil to the valve stems and then run her, it should get better the longer you run it. You can take off the tappet cover and squirt some oil on the stems also with it running and see if that helps.
If all this fails to help just post back and let us know.
Bob

I think Bob has it figured out for you. There are also some pipe plugs on top of the tappet case for that purpose to oil the valves some when sticking. Squirt some kerosene or penetrating oil in there and then some oil too and see what happens.

I took the cover off, and one side seemed alittle bit drier than the rest, so I gave it some oil. I tried starting it and usually I have been having to pull it to get it started, but figured I would use the flywheel this time, no luck, so I figured maybe check to see that I have spark. No spark to the left side, nice blue spark on the right. I don"t know much about mags, but I took the cover off anyway, but couldn"t find anything wrong, so I guess it will have to get rebuilt, and see what happens then

You may want to clean that pipe out from governor to tappet case and the oiler pipe in case. A oil line goes from the filter head to a jet that sprays oil onto the govenor gear and parts and it slings oil into that pipe to oil the rockers. If still not getting enough oil later to rockers you may need to check and clean that one too. Hopefully not as it isn't fun to get to. Might just need a cap and rotor and plugs and wires and setting points at .015 if a Wico.

Glen, The mag I have is a splitdorf, I have been looking on other sites and found one with a Dixie mag like I need to have my D original,(1927 vintage) but it is $500, rebuilding my mag looks pretty good after seeing that price tag! I had all the oil lines off and cleaned up before I installed them again. For some reason, the right side isn"t getting quite as much oil and the center and left, suppose alitte farther to travel. When I removed the valve cover there was alot of oil in there. I have new plug wires, and adjusted the points, but still no spark. I think I will just get it rebuilt then I don"t have any worrys. I will post back and let you know what happens! Thanks for your help

Rob, It just takes more labor on rebuilding those older mags and just coils rewound with freight can run $100-125 + other parts and labor. See too many online that I wonder about and sure wouldn't pay that for a Dixie mag unless it had been completely gone thru and magnet charged and guaranteed. I got some of those Dixie mags but need some more for parts to fix them up. Your Splitdorf probably has a bad condenser but can replace those with a capacitor now too. You might look at the holes and oiler pipe more and make sure that gasket or packing is in place at the elbow. They can leak at that elbow some too. How is your oil pressure? Might need to turn the screw in on filter head some too for more pressure. If you don't think it's getting enough oil at govenor gear area can take that line loose inside case and run a wire or drill thru it to clean the jet out some too. Otherwise you have to remove the govenor case to get at that oil jet there. Let us know how it goes.

Glen, I have to talk it out with my dad and see what he wants to do. I think maybe I will take that mag apart, just to see what I find. The only way to figure them out is to take them apart, that is one way to learn. I will post back when i figure it out. Thanks so much for your help Glen! It is greatly appreciated, have a nice day
