37 A misses badly

I have a 37 A that usually runs pretty good. Last time I ran it it worked fine and shutoff normal by turning the fuel off. When I went to start it a few days ago it was hard to start and when it finally did start it was missing really bad and it stalled out. I got it started again today and it missed some, ran fine for 15-25 seconds and then missed and eventually died. I checked the spark and both wires were blue. it also smoked really bad whenever it would come back on after missing so I think it has fuel. I was thinking dirt in the fuel lines or bad spark but both of those seem to be fine. What do you think?

I have a '37 A, and have had similar problems twice. Both times, I had a pin-hole in the carb float (both times, the hole was in the same place on the float). It seems that on my tractor, the float rests on part of the carb body when the bowl is empty. when I would load the A on a trailer and kill the engine by turning off the fuel, the bowl would obviously be empty, and the float would jiggle around-rubbing a hole in it as I hauled the tractor. I finally learned to open the fuel back up for a few seconds to refill the bowl after the engine died when hauling. It has been several years now without the problem recurring.

If you have the old style shut off, they are not a positive shut off and can still leak fuel past.Combine that with a leaky needle and seat and you are still going to flood your cylinders while sitting.

The fact that it smokes badly leads me to believe that your carburetor is flooding the engine with fuel. You might have a float that is sticking open, or some trash in the needle valve. Check the easy things first!!!
