Just purchased a #55 a-b-h plow (3-14") mech lift and all the tires a junk. Currently the sizes are 5.00-21 (land) 5.50-16 (furrow) and 4.00-12 (tail). After looking at Miller's tire price for the 5.00-21, I began the search and found that later models had a 16" rim for the land wheel and later yet had 15" rims. Question is what sizes are they? Rim width, tire width? Possibly a motorcycle tire would be similar in size. I'm also looking for a manual. Any guidance would be appreciated. TIA

I'd say you have the correct tire sizes, the 55A is a rice plow available in 12" and 14" sizes with usually larger coulters and wider wheels. The 55B was 12-14 or 16" widths with clutch lift and intended for regular (dry land) plowing. The 55H is a 55B set up for hydraulic lift and depth control using a remote cylinder. The problem you will encounter when changing to a smaller tire diameter is now your plow is lower and you have lost your useful depth adjustment range as well as clearance. When John Deere changed wheel sizes they also changed the length of the vertical portion of the axle to equalize things. You can put on whatever size wheel you can fit, but be prepared for a "low-rider" plow.

Those sound like the correct sizes. As I understand it you have a 55 A (mechanical lift). The larger land wheel presumably was used to give more leverage (slower lift) under adverse traction conditions. Most of the farmers I remember from the 40's had 16" wheels and swiped one of the tire chains from the car if the field got greasy. I can check the parts book, but don't have time nopw.
