What weight motor oil should be used in an early JD D? One of my friends said that he runs Shell Rotella 15-40 in his styled D, I usually run 30 weight in mine, but he said that the Rotella is better. Just wondering what anyone else thinks!!

I run Rotella in everything from my delivery trucks, forklifts, pickups, mowers, and my D.

I believe the recommeded oil for the summer is straight 40 weight up to about 90-F and then straight 50 above 90-F.
Modern detergent oil is ok IF the engine has been rebuilt and is very clean inside the crankcase. If it has years of sludge and crud inside, modern detergent oils will loosen and pick up a lot of the old sludge.

I wouldn't worry about your ability to choose an oil for your D. Far more engines met an early death from no, low or old oil than ever did from having the wrong oil. Having an integral oil filter prior to WWII meant you had a premium engine.
