I"m assemblying 47 AO radiator with new gaskets - top and bottom. What type of gasket sealer should I use on top & bottom of each gasket? Thanks a bunch.

I use the clear silicone gasket maker in the caulking gun type of tube. It seals well and the excess can be cut away and the remaining material is not visible.
The castings are usually pitted and it takes a good layer of it to fill the gaps.
I just installed the rad on my "D" using this sealant.

Don't use those thin gaskets JD sells. I make my own 1 piece style out of thicker gasket paper or cork rubber composition. I also have had good luck with a high quailty silcone sealer I see now that they have some made for antifreeze use. I also have had some tanks resurfaced at the local engine rebuild shop they have a giant belt sander made to do alum. heads this works great on the tanks. The tanks on tractors from my home state of Ohio are usually real bad,I have had some from out of state tractors that were real good. So I guess the local area water has a big effect on these.

I've always liked Permatex #3, the doughy stuff that comes out like thick tooth paste. The RTV's always seem to be set up in the tube by the time I use them a second time, so I don't keep them around anymore.

If the castings have any nasty pits, try using JB Weld and a putty knife, then drag them over a the flattest piece of concrete sidewalk you can find. You'll be amazed how flat they'll get. ;)

Those castings are old & gray! They are not as smooth as once they were, and right you are to apply a gasket sealer & not rely on the gasket alone. I usually high a hi-temp RTV, or silicon compound -- only at this locatin of all in the tractor. 'Does a great job for me. (PatB)
