I have a 45 A, that when I touch the throttle, it wants to rev up almost wide open. I have been trying to adjust the linkages, but it hasn"t helped much. I have it adjusted at least when I pull the throttle back it doesn"t kill the motor, but just tapping the throttle it idles way up high. Any suggestions on what to do???? I never did anything to the governor so I am thinking maybe it is something there, but I don"t want to get in over my head either, being that i never tackled anything with a governor before.

I would check Duane's suggestion. I am in the process of finishing an A with rpm problems. (nothing got done in the last 6-9 months). Before dismantling one could only use about 1/3 throttle to keep the rpm's in check. On dismantling one of the weights was found laying on top of the main case. The fanshaft and governor are enough of a pain that if you have to do very much you might as well do everything.

Rob,
A good way to check operation of the governor is (with the tractor off) to remove the cotter pin holding the governor rod to the carb butterfly, push the throttle lever to full speed and rotate the carb butterfly to the wide-open position. The governor rod should be 1/2 hole too short to just slip in the butterfly. When that is proper put the governor rod back in the butterfly (without the cotter pin) and start the tractor, then hold the carb butterfly with your left hand and remove the governor rod with your right. Then change the engine speed manually by opening and closing the butterfly. When you are doing this, the governor rod should move smoothly and positively. If it does not move, jerks, or oscillates back and forth, you will need to look into your governor. If it operates properly, you have a problem elsewhere, probably either with the linkage or your carburetor. Post back and we'll go from there.

Duane, I tried what you told me to do, and nothing happens. I guess I will have to take the governor appart. I never have done this before, so it will be a learning experience. Thanks for you help

Rob,
By "nothing happened" I assume you had no motion of the governor rod? If that is the case you will have to pull the end cap off the governor at least and have a look inside. I would pull the magneto off also, as when you loosen and remove the governor cap on the flywheel side a spring on the governor shaft will move the shaft and disconnect it from the magneto. When you put the governor back together, your chances of the governor slot engaging the magneto coupling are slim to none, with the rather common result that the magneto case will break at the bottom.
