Breakaway coupler rebuild--What's the trick?

I have the rebuild kit and I've been attempting to disassemble the unit. There's a snap ring that has to come out as down pressure is applied to the plug. It's not one of those snap rings that have holes at the ends this is just a round spring wire type. There's got to be a trick to this, there is no way to grab hold of it to get it out. Does anyone have any experience with rebuilding this type of coupler.
This one is on a 1020 but I've seen the same type on different deer models.

Again Thanks to everyone that helped me out, it is much appreciated. I have the diagram that shows the position of the rings but I wasn't sur about the easiest way to go about it. I'll put the backup ring in first then the O ring as ya'll suggested

1020, Here is how an old JD veteran does it. Open up the vise far enough to put spool in it end ways with a short 3/8" X 1" bolt placed on the end of inner spool that has the wire ring entrapped by its tapered end. Close the vise compressing inner spool with the short bolt pushing in on inner spool to move it inward inside outer spool just far enough to allow snap ring to be removed with a strong pick or a small sharpened screw driver. You will bend the snap ring doing this but that is no concern as a new one is furnished in the kit. It can be done this way as that is the way I have done it for over twenty years. Good Luck, DW

Thank you DW, there is no substitute for experience and I appreciate you sharing it with me.

Now that I have it apart I just to have figure out how to get it back together. It looks pretty straight forward but not having done it before I imagine I could benefit from your knowledge.

Is it best to put the "O" ring and backing back in together or should I put one or the other in first

Also the receptacle has a flat side where the lever passes thru. Does this face up or down?

Mike and msb are correct, As Mike said the o-ring goes towards the oil but put the back up ring in first then the o-ring through the center of it and tuck it in front of the back-up ring with a pick. The flat side of the spool is for the lever spring to set on which is facing up when looking at it as if housing would be mounted on tractor. DW

I think I put the back up ring in first then the o-ring. I also think the o-ring goes on the side closest to where the oil is going to be.

Flat side goes up.It is where the spring and then the E clip goes on the lever.

slight problem. I took out a dounut shaped "O"ring on the wide side of the recepticle(the side with the steel balls)but the kit supplies a flat type "O" ring more like a thick washer. Is this the correct part?.
