I recently acquired a 43 hand start B.Currently there only two ways to shut the motor off.Full choke or turn the gas off and wait until it runs out.It has a wico type c mag but there are no grounding terminals on either side of the mag or anywhere else on it that is obvious to me.There is a small bolt on the bottom towards the back that I do not know what it is for.Is there a simple way to ground this mag?Also could I set the idle way down so that when you pull the throttle back it would quit?On my 50 gas B you either turn off the ignition switch or pull the throttle back and it quits.

Usually killed the engine, high gear, with the brakes. Sometimes we let them run dry but didn"t really like to - at lunchtime, there were often some little people around who could get hurt. Often reached down & shut off the 3-way about 50 to 100 yards out, but killed it with the brakes. A neighbor put his B away one night, thought he had shut off the gas, next morning at 5:00 AM it was still idling.

Try grounding that "bolt" some of the Wico's has a ground bolt and most mag rebuilders use that bolt.... it usually has a small metal strap with a button. You pushed the button to ground the mag.
I made my own using the same theory,think I used a feeler gauge for the strap (it has to be of spring steel to work) all you are doing is just grounding the points. If nothing else, allways shut the fuel off and let it run till it dies. This tells you that the fuel will not run down the cylinders into your oil,nothing worse than having to change new oil because its full of gas!

I agree with Old. The manual indicates that closing the fuel valves is the proper procedure for shutting it down. Not exactly up to current OSHA standards, but it works. Part of the reason this is the procedure is that the B always has to be initially started with gasoline. If the tractor was last run with something other than gasoline then the fuel must be removed from the carburetor prior to another cold start. The alternative fuel could also be drained using the petcock on the bottom of the floatbowl. Choking and braking to stop the engine have been adequately covered by others. As far as slowing the engine rpm with the throttle, it will work, but remember that once you go below 250 or so rpm, that the impulse coupling starts to kick in. It is conceivable that you could be causing undue wear on the magneto parts by doing this in an incomplete fashion.

We always killed our older 2cyl tractors by idleing as slow as possible, holding the brakes & engaging the clutch. NEVER kill them with the choke!!!!! !!! That not only makes them hard to start, but washes lube from the cyl walls and also contributes to oil contamination. This method has worked fine for almost 70 yrs in my family. Of course if a tractor has a leaky float valve you must shut off the fuel whether you kill it or let it run dry.

Have you ever noticed how the front grilles on those old JD-A's and B's are always bent up so bad and a possible reason for it? That must have been so the farmer could stall the tractor against a tree or whatever and get to lunch and a little rest quicker. That must'a been it! It is best to turn the gas off to stop the engine for easy startup next time.

Shuting the gas off it the way the manuals says to do it. Chokeing can give you problems of gas in the oil. Also shuting the gas makes it easyer to start in the next time you want to start it.

We had a 30 something B when I was a kid and then an early 40 something later. People will tell you it is not good to choke it to kill it, and they may be right, but that is the way everyone did it that I knew of. Some say to put it in gear and hold the brakes and engage the clutch. That seems hard on it to me, but maybe not. twopopper has the best way. CLW

Adjust the throttle stop screw so engine dies with lever all the way back. Thats what I did with my 37 B.

I have a 50 model B and the guy I got it from says to cut off the fuel and let it run out. Seems to make sense to me, because that sucker sure is close to impossible to start if it ever gets flooded. Seems like leaving gas in the cylinders is a good way to flood it. If you are looking for an emergency cut off, there is a way to ground out the mag by making a hole in the back and grounding to something on the inside. I haven't tried this, but you might want to repost as a question about grounding the WICO and I sure someone will let you know how to do it.
