I need my mag rebuilt for my unstyled D and I am wondering where I could get it done. It doesn"t have the original mag. I was watching RFDTV the other week and there were a couple of gentlemen on the show that worked on JD"s. One worked on rebuilding carbs and the other rebuilt mags. I remember one guys name was corky, but I can"t remember the other. I would like to be put in touch with the person that rebuilt the mags. I would appreciate any help I can get! Thank You

i have a 1929 D with a Splitdorf 246C mag. i have spoken with Clooney and Duane Larsen in my quest to rebuild it and i must emphasize what Clooney said. be very careful if it a Splitdorf. i found out the hard way what happens when you try to work on it and don't know exactly what you are doing. i lucked out and i think found the repair parts i needed, but they aren't as plentiful as Wico stuff. of course, using a Splitdorf as a first mag to learn how to work on one was probably not the brightest thing i've done.

Rob, that "corky" you mentioned sounds like Mr. Cork Groth of Corks Tractor Trauma Center in Iowa, he rebuilds carbs and mags. Other mag shops which may fix you up, depending on what particular mag you have, are:

Roberts Carb repair in Spencer Iowa (712) 262-5311 www.robertscarbrepair.com

McDonald Carb & Ignition in Jefferson, GA (706) 367-4179 www.mcdcarbign.bigstep.com

Magneeders (417) 358-7863 www.magneeders.com

I can personally recommend Robert Beaver and Cork Groth, I have used their services and seen their work and know them, but Im sure the others are probably fine also. The simpler ones like the Wico C and X I rebuild my own, but if its a rare one and hard to get parts, you might check with the above or my friend Mr. Duane Larson, who posts here and repairs mags himself.

Let us know, hope this helps, Good Luck n God Bless

I dont have a d or any ?'s about it but I maet corky groth at a sale and he seems like a great guy that knows what he's talking about. we bout a 1938 john deere A on steel that day and he confirmed that it was the right magneto from a pretty far distance. Anyway I'll skip to the point, his favorite tractor is the GP tractors and I am looking to buy one, he told me to stop by any time butt i lost his card he gave me with his address. So if you know his address or phone # I would greatly appriciate it.

Cork Groth is one of the guys and I think the other is Harold Scherer of Davenport,Ia. I looked on my mag and this is what is on it. Spec.0016 No. z746 and the other side has Edison-Splitdorf Corporation Type CD. I think I will get in touch with Mr.Groth and see what he can do for me. Thank You for all the input. Have a great day!

Rob, depending on the mag you have, some are pretty easy & can be a do it yourself (like the Wico’s) & others are a little harder & very easy to do damage to while working on so maybe should be sent out..

If you don't find anyone give me an E-mail & will privately recommend a few places or people..

Clooney

I rebuilt the mag for my "D". All of the parts were available from Deere (also available from other sources I believe). I changed the cap, points, condenser, rotor, plugs, and wires. It works great - my tractor is hand-start.
You may want to try rebuilding yours!

Good luck,
JGC

I also have a D with mag problems. It is a 1939 D with a edison-splitdorf mag. Can anyone of the above mentioned folks rebuild it. Thanks in advance for the help and support.

Thanks again Brad D

Brad,
What in particular is your magneto problem? If you have had it off it is trickier to reinstall properly than a Wico, since it only fires on the compression stroke. It is not unusual to have an ES mag problem which turns out just to be an installation one - a cheap and easy fix.

Thanks for the reply. I have not had the mag off. The tractor has been sitting for a while. It only produced a weak spark while being pulled in 3rd gear. The engine was trying to fire but could not stay running. A steady mist of gas was exiting the decompression petcocks while being pulled which leads me to believe that its a mag issue. Thanks again for all the help and advice

Brad,
Pull the distributor cap and polish the points with some crocus cloth or fine aluminum oxide paper - NOT a point file - those points are toooo hard to get to file anything away.
