Hello,

I own an old but quite beloved John Deere 316 with the Kohler cast iron engine. It burns oil at a prodigious rate – it spews loads of foul smelling smoke at startup. The smoking drops off a lot after the first couple minutes but by then the damage is done - everything nearby stinks big time.

The technicians at the local Deere dealership tell me it needs a ring job, probably requiring reboring the cylinder, oversize rings, and other scary sounding things. They don’t sound overly confident that this will certainly solve the problem and they say they won’t even know if it’ll work until they get the engine out and apart to see if the cylinder walls are too badly scored to allow a repair. Plus, it’ll take “six to eight weeks” and cost a bundle. But, I own a lot of accessories so the repair might be worth it.

So, I found this forum on the web when searching for “john deere 316 engine replacement” and figured I’d ask some questions:

1. Does the diagnosis I have been given sound right? 2. Does their proposed solution sound right? 3. Does anyone offer replacement engines for my tractor? 4. If so, how much do they cost and do they require a lot of modification or are they a drop-in?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Stevan

Check with Kevin Dunham on garden tractor board he rebuilds them he will ship you one pretty cheap and he does all his machine work on site. A lot cheaper than most dealers.

Thanks for the suggestion about Kevin. I did a search on that discussion board but could not find that name. Any idea if he uses some other name? Maybe you have an e-mail address for him?

The info I have on the JD 316 indicates that it used both the Kohler K341 16hp single and the Onan 16 twin. I know the cost of an overhaul by a dealer can be more then the tractor is worth. They charge $40-$60 per hour and mark up the parts 50-100%. I have overhauled more then a dozen K series Kohlers (singles). I have been using aftermarket parts from Stens corp with good results and they are a fraction of the cost of OEM. If you have a good block and crank and are mechanically inclined, you should be able to do a complete overhaul yourself. Basic tools including a torque wrench and Kohler service manual(about $15) will be required. Parts including piston, rings, rod, valves, gaskets, side bearings, etc will run around $300. The cost of boring/honing and crank grinding at your local automotive machine shop will run about $150. If the valve guides need replaced add another $50. All in all the complete job will cost about $500 if you do the disassembly/assembly work yourself. This is for a Kohler single not a twin. If you decide to purchase a complete new engine, the Kohler Magnum twin will be a good replacement. Good luck.

Thanks for the detailed description, very helpful.

Is the Kohler Magnum a drop-in replacement or will I need to do some modifications to either the mechanical or electrical hookup in the 316? Mine is definitely the single cylinder Kohler.

Stevan, Can"t say if the Magnum engine is a drop in. If you contact a Kohler dealer with your model, spec, & serial numbers he should be able to "Match" an engine to your tractor.

The 316 engine is a B43E Kohler horizontal 2 cylinder that is not worth rebuilding. I have personnaly repowered several 316"s with a brand new complete Onan twin that is the same engine used on the 318. You can buy these at a great price from Tulsa small engine warehouse. You will get everything new including a starter, carb and an adapter kit for the 316. It is an easy replacement and looks original. You will fall in love all over again with the 316 with this new engine. See the following link, they have the best price on small engines that I have seen and they have tech notes for the conversion. You will find it quite expensive to properly rebuild your old engine, you might as well spend a little more and get a new one that is pressure lubed. If you have any questions I would be happy to help.

You might want to search your local "Yellow Pages" for a Kohler Distributor. You might be able to purchase a factory new "short block" rather than rebuilding your original motor. Many parts for the older Kohler engines are still available direct from Kohler. My 2 cents worth.

If you are looking for web resources, browse over to www.weekendfreedommachines.com and browse/search through their repair and restoration forum. There have been several good engine replacement threads. And don't be too afraid of rebuilding the one you have. These engines are very rebuildable.

Thanks for that site, I'd not found it.

As for rebuilding the engine myself, I think that's over my head. I'm hesitant to start such a project and have it fail. If it's just a lot of wrench turning and screwdriver work I'm fine but if it needs to be rebored or something I'm toast.

Thanks again.

I understand your hesitation. I've never done a full rebuild myself either. The major work is getting the cylinder bored and you would need to get a machine shop to do that, but the rest is just mostly wrench turning and a few new parts. There are several people that contribute that can help you through each step. I think if you read through the postings you will see that you can get a lot of help with that 316. I've got the same 316 you have, but I don't have all the neat attachments. Wish I did.

I had a 316 that smoked like yours. I sold it to another guy telling him it needed an overhaul. When he got it apstr the piston was worn out from rocking in the bore. He bored it put in new rod and piston and whatever ir needed. That was 5 yrs ago and it is still going strong.
I also know a guy who got a kit from Smallenginewarehouse. He was very happy with the kit. He choose the Honda engine. That would be a sweet setup. He also said the people were really good to deal with.

Thanks all. I contacted SmallEngineWarehouse.com and found a 20 HP Briggs and Stratton offering for $1,350 plus shipping. They no longer sell a Honda for the 316, they say none of Honda's current line fits without modifying the tractor.

That's a lot of money but it gives me a like-new tractor that's a lot better built than the Deere's being sold by Home Depot. Fixing my 316 also saves me a lot of money by letting me keep my snow blower, mower, and tiller attachments. I'd have to replace them all if I bought a new tractor.

Thanks again for your help.

Those 316's ran an upright single cylinder Kohler. Sounds like the local Deere dealer ship has been burned by these jobs that can cost more than what the tractor is worth. www.smallenginewarehouse.com has about four differnt brands of new engines with warrenty that will bolt in. They sell adaptor kits should you wish to change engine makes.

Also, the "Garden Tractors" discussion group on this web site can probably help you. They deal exclusively with the smaller tractors. This board is mostly farm tractors.

Stevan,

I don't know about the 316 but I have replaced the entire engine in a couple of 317's. The 317 uses the Kohler KT17QS-24301 twin cylinder 17 HP. The engine came in a box completely assembled ready to bolt in. The swap took some time but was worth it. The engine cost about $1400 a couple of years ago. I just looked in a Northern catalog and they list the same engine for $1865. I got the replacements from a local John Deere lawn and garden shop.

Both of the old engines were 22+ years old and both had broken connecting rods with holes in the case (in the same place). If you rebuild yours I would insist on new rods.

Jason
