I just bought my first tractor which is a 1951 john deere B.It has about 20 hours on a rebuilt motor. This tractor will not be worked and will not be used during cold weather. What would be the best weight oil to use?The man I bought it from does not remember what he put in it.I do have an operators manual on order as I do not know even how to check the oil.

Keep watching the Parts for sale adds, a set of shutters should show up...OR post a message, looking for a set..someone will have a set... You might end up makeing the rod from the pedestal lever, to the shutters... Check to see if the lever is still there, on the Rt side of the hood, on the Inside about 8 to 10" behind the radiator...It can be hard to tell if it is still there...it probably is there.. From that lever, a short rod runs forward to connect to the shutters... Probably $50.00 or less for shutters that work and are not frozen or rusted up..

I would like to thank the people that responded to my oil weight question.Bushogpapa mentioned radiator shutters.I checked and my 51 jd B does not have the shutters or linkage, all I have is the lever on the column. What do I need, where do I find it and what would be a fair price?

If you are not going to work it, I hope it has operational shutters...!!! In the Winter pushing snow, I don't think I have ever had to open them even a little..!!!! You should get it up to 170 degrees as a proper operating temp...it dries the moisture out of the tractor and reduces wear by an amazing factor...!! It will never even warm up if not..!

We have used 10-40 oil in ours for 40 years..I use one often in the winter to push snow.. I prefer Castrol for a broken-in engine--not for a new un-broken-in engine..(Gasoline) I doubt that it would start in real cold weather with straight 30 Wt.. Ron..

My owners manual for my 51B says to use SAE30 oil. That is what i use in mine. Also if you are going to store it for long periods of time between shows or whatever. You should use a good fuel stabilizer in the gas this will help keep it fresh. Good luck with your new hobby.

Might your name be Richard Miller? If so, Brett and Sarah say "Hi". And you might check with Hoover - he will know.
