Where is the oil filter on a John Deere 5020? How often do I service the oil and the filter on this tractor?

The filter is located behind a 4-bolt cover that should be on the LH side of the oil pan. Replace the cover seal at the same time, and warm the engine well before dropping the oil. Oil-change interval varies with the machine. A lot of guys go 100 hours, some go 200 and some modern tractors with today's high-quality oils have recommended drain intervals clear up to 500 hours. That would be pushing it in my book, though. If the tractor gets a lot of idle time or is operated in very dirty conditions, change the oil more often. If it doesn't get warmed up after start-up and kept at operating temp for at least an hour or so, change it more often. If it doesn't get a minimum of 100 hours per year, change it twice per year whether it's clean or not. Oil is cheap compared to engine parts. Finally, get the proper operator's manual for your tractor.

What do you mean if the tractor 'gets alot of idle time' I operate the tracor most of the time in idle, because idle is all the power I have ever needed...is it better on the engine to operate at higher RPM???

That 5020 was built to drag large tillage implements or run large PTO-powered equipment at full load all day, not to be used as a glorified garden tractor or putted around on. Excessive idling can lead to coolant temps too low for complete combustion of the fuel, which in turn will lead to fuel dilution of the crankcase oil and/or washed down cylinder liners, which is hard on the internal parts. Not getting the engine oil good and hot and keeping it there for an hour or so will allow condenstion to build up in the crankcase, which is hard on the internal parts. Yes, providing it's properly maintained, a large engine like that will actually last longer being started once or twice a day and being worked hard all day instead of being started and stopped 20 times or idled around at little to no load. 531s aren't cheap to overhaul, so you might be money ahead to buy another smaller tractor more appropriately sized for what you use the 5020 for.

G-MAN,
I am glad you took time to help me on this I am new to using machines like this.
When I do run it after about 20 minutes, I do notice that the temperature gauge goes to normal and stays there....will this be OK??? Maybe I should let the machine warm up first..

By the way...I WILL have the oil changed after every 100 hours!!!!

It probably won't get into the normal range without doing some work or at least pulling itself around for a while, but it's a good idea to let it run for five minutes or so before putting any major load on it. And it's a good idea to let it cool down at idle for another five minutes before shutting it off. 100 hours on an oil change is probably fine. Just make sure to use good quality engine oil, such as Deere 15W-40 Plus 50, Shell Rotella, Mobil Delvac, etc. None of those are cheap oils, but are cheaper than overhauls. Good luck with your 5020 and be sure to get yourself an operator's manual. It will give you a world of info about your tractor.
