I am looking to buy a 1967 JD 5020 tractor from a dealer I asked him to run a dyno test on it and he came back and said that it produced around 130 hp...I know that it is rated at 133 HP, but I thought that John deere was being Conservative on this rateing!??
I here from time to time on this sight that the JD 6030 is rated 176 HP but produced over 200!! on the Dyno.Is this the same story with the 5020??

Plesae help with this...
Thank you..

I have a 1967 5020 with a Naturally aspirated stock 531 engine(pre 25000 serial #)with 4500hours on it and have had this tractor for 7 years and 2000hours..had it on a dyno 2 years ago and it peaked out at 136hp but guy running the dyno said it is accurate in, all honesty within plus/minus 5 Hp at the range (it was a 500hp max dyno), with a turbo on the 6030>> a little more boost (and fuel) goes a long way to more hp....

at 4500 hours I am having throwout bearing problems other than that, in the last 7 years other than batteries/filters...i have had to replace steering cylinder seals (if they leak you start to loose turning radius), the plastic return lines that clip on each injector (the blew under full load on a hill side shortly after I got the tractor.. change them if they look yellow),I check the rod bearings every 1000hours as several guys in my area had problems in the past ..so far okay
I have had no problems with engine or trans (other than shifter linkage)brakes, hydraulics etc, etc. My son does custom work with this machine with a 17ft centerfold 220 JD disk in heavy clay in rolly terrain ...so this machine is loaded to all it wants to handle.....

The 6030 was way underated but I don"t know if JD did that with the 5020. The engine in the 5020 is not as "hot" as the one in the 6030. It kinda depends on the condition of the tractor too. In my experience, it seems like tractors loose a little hp when they start getting a lot of hours on them

I would rather have the dealer tell me it made 130HP than 150HP. Both for the tractors condition and the dealer"s honesty.

Yes you have a very good point...the tractor only has 4325 hours on it...what do you think? It looks real clean!!

By the way he said it produced are the 130'ish range not just 130 HP...

I'm a little bit in to the 6030-thing. So I read as much as I can find on them. The HP-ratings are from the original 175,99 to 225HP and up. I think that the rating depends on how the fuelpumpsrews are turned...and of course how good the engine still is...for example, bad fuel injectors cost lots of HP...I've seen pictures of 6030's with the 619 engine. These tractor produce a lot more horsepower that the originally 531 engine.

Hope this helps a bit..

Greetings Mark

The 6030 never came from the factory with a 619 though. Same block as the 531 thought.
